Once More Unto the Beach on “Sweetness and Light”
Once more unto the beach, dear friends!
This morning on “Sweetness and Light,” for Labor Day weekend, we’ll wring the last from our beach towels as we bid farewell to the summer season.
I’ll have two works that are Jersey Shore specific, including the “Cape May Suite” by Rick Sowash (who lives in Cincinnati) and “The Atlantic City Pageant” by John Philip Sousa – named for the famous beauty pageant and given its first performance on Atlantic City’s Steel Pier.
We’ll also hear from Virgil Thomson, Émile Waldteufel, Ronald Binge, Clive Richardson, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, and Morton Gould.
It will be hotter than Harfleur, but we’ll seek solace in the surf. Join me by the seaside for the last throes of summer, on “Sweetness and Light,” this Saturday morning at 11:00 EDT/8:00 PDT, exclusively on KWAX Classical Oregon!

July 4th Weekend Seaside Serenity on KWAX
It’s the Fourth of July weekend, and the beaches are open!
I hope you’ll join me this morning on “Sweetness and Light” for some serene inspirations evocative of surf and sand.
For the locals (I am, after all, based in Princeton), I’ll have two works that are Jersey shore specific, including the “Cape May Suite” by Rick Sowash (who lives in Cincinnati; so there!) and “The Atlantic City Pageant” by John Philip Sousa – named for the famous beauty pageant and given its first performance on Atlantic City’s Steel Pier.
We’ll also hear from Virgil Thomson, Émile Waldteufel, Ronald Binge, Clive Richardson, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Morton Gould.
Oh yeah, and I almost forgot John Williams, who wryly puts “Tourists on the Menu” in a promenade from the proto-summer blockbuster “Jaws.”
No teeth in any of the music, however, on “Sweetness and Light.” Meet me at the seaside this Saturday morning at 11:00 EDT/8:00 PDT, exclusively on KWAX, the radio station of the University of Oregon!

Jersey Shore Childhood Memories Parkway Traffic
Memories of those childhood trips to the Jersey shore, stuck in traffic on the Garden State Parkway. Windows down out of fear of the car overheating. They don’t call it the Parkway for nothing.

NJ Choirs Sing in Princeton & Jersey Shore
Cicada song is not the only music to be heard in New Jersey over the next week or so, as VOICES Chorale and the New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus – NJGMC invite amateur singers to join them for concerts in Princeton and at the Jersey shore.
The NJGMC will hold its annual “summer sing” at Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Hopewell-based VOICES will perform at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, August 24 at 7 p.m.
You can read more about it in my article in today’s Trenton Times:
