NYC Early Music Concert & American Road Trip

New Amsterdam was established by the Dutch in the 17th century at the southern tip of Manhattan. Today’s Noontime Concert on The Classical Network comes to us from contemporary New York City.

The New Amsterdam Consort will present music by composers whose lives coincided with the infancy of the island’s European settlement, including Antonio Bertali (1605-1669), Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704), Ricardo Rognoni (c.1550-1620), and Georg Muffat (1553-1704).

The program was recorded at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 325 Park Avenue, on October 18, 2018. Free midtown concerts are presented at the Chapel at St. Bart’s on Thursdays at 1:15 p.m. during the regular season. This year, that season commences on September 5 with The Vivaldi Project performing classical string trios.

These concerts are made possible in part by Gotham Early Music Scene, or GEMS. GEMS is a non-profit corporation that supports artists and organizations in New York City devoted to Early Music. Learn more and check out the events calendar at gemsny.org.

Then stick around: with Labor Day weekend ahead, we’ll hit the road with an afternoon of American music evocative of some of our country’s natural and man-made wonders. It’s a journey that will encompass a number of our cities, states, and favorite vacation spots.

Among our featured works will be “Yellowstone,” for violin and orchestra, by Jett Hitt, Composer. Hitt, who holds a doctorate in composition, conducts guided horseback tours at the national park.

The RV is all gassed up and ready to go. We’ll hit the pike, from 12 to 4 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

Labor Day Concert: Music for Workers and Wonders

Sorry to be posting so late, but I had some computer woes this morning, so I am racing to ketchup – er, catch up, I mean. Not surprisingly, I am distracted by thoughts of Labor Day.

Get ready for a real labor of love, as we hear selections about work and the worker, punctuated by music inspired by man-made and natural wonders. On the roster is Tobias Picker’s “Keys to the City” (written to mark the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge), John Alden Carpenter’s ballet “Skyscrapers,” Samuel Jones’ Symphony No. 3 (a musical response to Texas’ Palo Duro Canyon), and Jett Hitt, Composer’s “Yellowstone” for violin and orchestra. Hitt, who holds a doctorate in composition, conducts guided horseback tours at the national park!

In addition, there will be lighter pieces about picnic foods and gazebo dances.

I hope your Stanley thermos is full of iced coffee. Put away your hard hat and lunch pail and join me for one final helping of baked beans and corn-on-the-cob for Labor Day, this afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • Yellowstone Inspires Violin Concerto

    Yellowstone Inspires Violin Concerto

A violin concerto of Brahmsian proportions, inspired by Yellowstone National Park? You’ll have a chance to hear it this morning. I’ll be playing Jett Hitt’s cinematic “Yellowstone” in the 10:00 hour. Hitt, who holds a doctorate in composition, conducts guided horseback tours at the park!

We’ll also hear the “Chicago Fantasie Overture” by Helmuth Fuchs, who makes his home in New Jersey. The work was given its area premiere by the Westminster Community Orchestra, right here in Princeton, this past season.

Also ahead: Princeton University professor emeritus Paul Lansky’s “Travel Music” (featuring a segment about getting lost in Philadelphia) and Michael Daugherty’s exuberant “Route 66.”

We’re collecting musical postcards this morning on a road trip across country until 11 EDT on WPRB 103.3 FM and at wprb.com.
