The Mother of All Shows for Mother’s Day on “Sweetness and Light”
Get ready for the mother of all shows this week, on “Sweetness and Light.” It’s music for Mom for Mother’s Day!
Enjoy works on nursery themes by Grace Williams, Charles Williams, and Vaughan Williams (all unrelated). Also, odd man out Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Of course, Mom deserves more, so I’ve also enlisted Yo-Yo Ma (despite his name, not really a mother, though if said properly, guaranteed to get Mom’s attention) and Luciano Pavarotti (accompanied by Henry Mancini, no less).
Start your day with a musical candygram. It’s a suite of sweets for Mom on “Sweetness and Light, this Saturday morning at 11:00 EDT/8:00 EDT, exclusively on KWAX Classical Oregon!
Stream it, wherever you are, at the link:

Nursery Rhymes Mother’s Day Music on WPRB
Three Blind Mice. Old King Cole. Peter, Peter, Pumpkin-Eater. All nursery rhymes recollected from childhood.
Join me Thursday morning on WPRB for music inspired by these and more – the children’s books “Peter Pan,” “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” and “Higglety Pigglety Pop!” and fairy tales of Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, and the Brothers Grimm – as we salute the contributions of Mother, in advance of Mother’s Day.
We’ll find lots of sense in nonsense, this Thursday morning from 6 to 11 EDT, on WPRB and wprb.com. When I was a child, I understood as a child – and I still do, thanks to Mom, on Classic Ross Amico.

Fairy Tale Music on WPRB This Week
Once upon a time (yesterday), I decided it might be fun to do a show of fairy tale music and music inspired by nursery rhymes. This is the kind of thing I often did for Mother’s Day, back when I had my regular weekend air shifts. But a lazy August morning seems as good a time as any to spend with the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault and others.
To this end, we’ll hear music by Havergal Brian, Daniel Dorff, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Holst, William Hurlstone, Nikolai Medtner, Robert McBride, Robert Moran, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Ernst Toch, Siegfried Wagner, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Alexander Zemlinsky (or variations thereof).
Musical subjects will include Pinocchio, Snow White, Old King Cole, The Little Mermaid, Three Blind Mice, and Beauty and the Beast.
Fall under the enchantment tomorrow from 6 to 11 a.m. ET, on WPRB 103.3 FM or at wprb.com. Awake to a musical kiss from Classic Ross Amico.
