Philip Glass in Trenton Tomorrow Night

Very much looking forward to hearing the Philip Glass Violin Concerto, as performed by Yvonne Lam and the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside Valerie Coleman’s “Seven O’ Clock Shout” and Igor Stravinsky’s “Petrushka,” at Trenton’s Patriots Theater at the War Memorial, tomorrow night at 7:30!

Pre-concert lecture at 6:15; pre-concert performance by Trenton Music Makers at 6:50.

    Tickets and information at capitalphilharmonic.org.

Aranjuez Guitar Concerto NJ This Weekend

Opportunities to enjoy a genuine guitar concerto – that is to say, an acoustic guitar with symphony orchestra – in person are scarce. That being the case, it should be self-recommending for you to check out this weekend’s concert with the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra, as the centerpiece of tomorrow night’s Latin-inflected program will be not just any guitar concerto, but possibly the most famous of all time – or at the very least, of the last century – Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez.”

Even if you can’t pronounce it, you’ll recognize the music! Here’s the soloist, Peruvian artist David Galvez, to tell you more about it:

The program will also include works by Arturo Marquez and José Pablo Moncayo. Music director Daniel Spalding will conduct. The concert will be held at Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

  • Kate Mulligan Leads Capital Philharmonic

    Kate Mulligan Leads Capital Philharmonic

Kate Mulligan is the new executive director of the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey. In fact, she’s its first executive director.

Interestingly, her other passion is horses. She’s an award-winning equestrian jumper, a champion with a drive for excellence.

She’ll be introduced to the public at this weekend’s “New Year’s Eve Redux” concert on April 1 (no fooling), to be presented by CPNJ at Trenton’s Patriots Theater at the War Memorial.

Read all about it in my cover story for this week’s U.S. 1.

  • Visa Issues Sideline Soprano at Trenton Concert

Visa Issues Sideline Soprano at Trenton Concert

Obtaining a performing arts visa is a long and drawn out process. A few days ago, I shared a link to an article I wrote about Eric Houghton’s “Pioneer Songs,” which will be performed by the Westminster Community Orchestra, the Westminster Community Chorus, and the Glassbrook Vocal Ensemble, at Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton on November 10. I only received word yesterday that famed coloratura soprano Carla Maffioletti, formerly of André Rieu’s Johann Strauss Orchestra, will not be appearing on the program due to visa issues.

Maffioletti is also scheduled to appear at the War Memorial with the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey on two programs, both also at the War Memorial, on December 28 (a recital with chamber orchestra in the intimate George Washington Ballroom) and December 31 (a New Year’s Eve celebration with full orchestra in Patriots Theater). It is hoped that on those occasions everything will proceed as planned.

The article appeared on November 1 in the Trenton Downtowner. An extended version (which you probably won’t be surprised to hear, given the source, had to be edited for inclusion in the Downtowner due to its extreme length) will run in this upcoming week’s U.S. 1 Newspaper – PrincetonInfo, out on Wednesday. I am sharing the Downtowner piece again, minus the Maffioletti info, below.
