  • Triffids Terror Roy’s Sci-Fi Corner

Don’t trifle with Triffids! Try not to tremble at two hours of terror and terrariums on last night’s Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

Day of the Triffids Howard Keel Sci-Fi

    ANNIE GET YOUR TRIFFID
    SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN TRIFFIDS
    PLANT ONE ON ME KATE

Musical superstar of stage and screen Howard Keel gives his voice a rest in the sci-fi horror classic “The Day of the Triffids” (1962). Triffids, of course, are ambulatory carnivorous plants that hitch a ride to earth during a meteor shower to feast on human flesh.

All I know is, Keel better be gargling with salt water.

Drop by as we cultivate a healthy distrust of space-plants on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Stalk us, or “leave” a comment, as we livestream on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EST.

  • Gerald Fried Star Trek Legend Interview

Out of respect for Gerald Fried, Roy and I didn’t sing the “Star Trek” fight music – but you know we were thinking it.

Fried was our guest last night on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Click the video for recollections and insights from this screen legend.

Fried is the composer of over 200 film and television scores, including those for Kubrick, “Star Trek,” and producer David L. Wolper. His collaborations with Wolper include the film “Birds Do It, Bees Do It” (which earned Fried an Academy Award nomination) and the landmark miniseries “Roots” (which won him an Emmy).

Did I mention, Fried will be 93 on February 13? His most recent film, “Unbelievable!!!!,” received its online debut only months ago. In his spare time, he says, he’s now also writing screenplays. We are grateful to him for taking the time to share his fascinating reminiscences. Thank you, Gerald Fried!

  • Shore Leave Chaos Sci-Fi Show Tonight

On Friday night, Roy and I beamed down to a congenial planet in the Omicron Delta system for a little rest and relaxation. Unbenownst to us, it was actually a fantasy planet, so all our desires were made reality. Naturally, that meant there was much fighting, killing, and chorus girls in synthetic feathers. That’s what we get for going on “Shore Leave.”

You can share our “amusement” by watching the video below. Then be sure to join us tonight, as our special guest will be composer Gerald Fried, who wrote the music for five classic “Star Trek” episodes (including “Shore Leave” and “Amok Time,” with its iconic fight music); also Stanley Kubrick’s “The Killing” and “Paths of Glory,” the Academy Award-nominated “Birds Do It, Bees Do It,” and the Emmy Award-winning “Roots.”

We’re very excited to have him. Postpone your pon farr kal-if-fee, and join us for the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, this Sunday night at 7:00 EST!
