Santa Claus vs Devil Ruining Christmas on Sci-Fi

Tomorrow night, it’s our last chance to ruin Christmas with “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.”

Viewers are still slack-jawed and aghast over last year’s discussion of “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” An 11-year-old Pia Zadora in green face paint, a supporting cast of down-on-their-luck Broadway actors, and a fly-by-night production valued at a dollar-ninety-eight (with every penny onscreen). Where do we go from there?

All downhill, of course. WAY downhill, as it happens. Following in the footsteps of the “Rocky” franchise, we’ll up the ante, even as we go to Hell: our focus this week will be on the Mexican underground classic “Santa Claus Versus the Devil” (1959).

What begins almost as an inversion of Goethe’s “Faust,” with Lucifer dispatching his goateed lieutenant, Pitch, to earth, to turn the children of the world against Santa, builds to a “Spy vs. Spy” type showdown of the kind Blake Edwards would have loved. If only Jack Lemmon had played Pitch.

In the interim, Santa laughs it up with Merlin, a hirsute blacksmith, a multinational consortium of half-pint singing helpers, and a team of wind-up reindeer that will turn to dust with the rising sun, all while keeping tabs on the naughty and nice from his gold-and-crystal toyshop in space, high above the North Pole.

This being Mexico, somehow the Baby Jesus is never far away from the surreal, slapstick shenanigans.

It’s a literal war on Christmas, as Roy and I get hot under the collar. We’ll exchange views – maybe even blows – over “Santa Claus Versus the Devil,” on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Leave your eerie life-sized dolls in the comments section, as we livestream on Facebook, this week at a special time, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 23, AT 7:30 PM EST!

  • Land That Time Forgot Burroughs Sci-Fi

Land That Time Forgot Burroughs Sci-Fi

It occurs to me, I never got around to sharing last week’s show. I suppose it’s only appropriate that I, Old Man Time, would have forgotten “The Land That Time Forgot” (1974). To be fair, I was awfully tired on Sunday night. But you know what? I just watched it, and it turned out to be a pretty entertaining conversation, if I do say so myself.

“The Land That Time Forgot” is based on yet another rip-roaring adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs. We hope you’ll join us THIS Sunday for a visit with author and Burroughs authority Scott Tracy Griffin. Griffin has spent most of his life steeped in Burroughsiana and shares his wealth of knowledge through public speaking, interviews, film commentary, comics, and lavish coffee table books. He’s the author of “Tarzan: The Centennial Collection” and “Tarzan on Film.”

As a massive Burroughs fan myself, I’ve been looking forward to this show for a long time. But then, as you know, I was raised by apes. I hope you’ll join us for the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, with Scott Tracy Griffin. Bring your Burroughs questions to the comments section, as we livestream on Facebook, this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT!

  • Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

    Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

Is it possible some superior intelligence doesn’t want you to see the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner?

After at least two postponements, a horrific storm ripped through New Jersey last night, slashing the heavens with lightning, amputating limbs, and leaving Roy and I bereft of electricity. Mine was restored, finally, around dawn (too late for a good night’s sleep), but as of this writing, Roy remains powerless.

Be that as it may, we are determined that, after so many delays and setbacks, THE SHOW MUST GO ON. To this end, I’ll be sporting the tie-dye tee, as Roy leeches off the wi-fi of an unnamed neighborhood restaurant.

Tune in for nostalgic highlights! Viewer trivia! Audience participation! Also, my annual, subversive birthday card to Roy!

Marvel at the circles around my eyes, even as Roy runs circles around the suits. Join us in the comments section, or hop on camera and let us know how much you appreciate the show. L’amour the merrier, when we livestream on Facebook, this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT!

UPDATE: Roy’s electricity is back; mine was out again for half an hour this afternoon. Where this one will land is anyone’s guess!

    “Would you believe…”

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the much-anticipated ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE celebration of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner will be postponed until this SUNDAY EVENING AT 7:00 EDT. Thank you for your understanding!

    “Missed it by that much…”

    Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Celebrates 100

Tonight, it’s a tribute to endurance and “cama-der-oddity,” as we celebrate the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

What began during the pandemic as a lifeline to sanity and community, has become a weekly institution, with classic sci-fi movie and television fans joining us from around the globe – the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and (most notoriously) Hell, Norway – to weigh in on subjects ranging from “The War of the Worlds” to “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.”

Did you know: I was not actually Roy’s first cohost? Tune in for lots more trivia, hosannas, and audience participation. Highlights will be shared, prizes will be awarded, and my annual birthday card to Roy will be posted.

Put on your monkey suit, get all dolled up, and join us in the comments section. It will be 100 toasts to Roy, when we livestream on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!
