A Labor Day treat. One of the things I always loved about SCTV: this is a show that never talked down to its audience, and it trusted viewers to find it funny, even if they weren’t entirely sure what was going on. Nearly 40 years after its release into theaters, and still well before the advent of specialty cable channels devoted to classic movies, here’s a spot-on parody of John Ford’s “The Grapes of Wrath.” I must say, Joe Flaherty does a pretty mean (mean, mad) Henry Fonda.

Roy Clark Hee Haw Star Dead at 85
Roy Clark has died at 85.
By some bizarre coincidence, this is my second brush with “Hee Haw” today. The other was a reference to Junior Samples in this classic SCTV sketch (just to give you some insight into my unorthodox working methods). The reference is at around the 5:30 mark, but it’s worth watching the whole thing. Classic SCTV – with John Candy as slap-happy Cognac.

Then listen to Roy Clark play Ernesto Lecuona’s “Malagueña.”

Richard Harris Sings MacArthur Park Today
Today is the anniversary of the births of Paul Dukas and Vladimir Horowitz. But forget those hacks! Enjoy the vocal stylings of birthday boy Richard Harris, who sings “MacArthur Park.”
Then join me this afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. EDT, for Dukas and Horowitz, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.
