I’ve been invited to beam down to Captain Phil’s Planet (of the Vampires) this afternoon to be his guest on WUSB, the radio station of Stony Brook University. Therefore, I’ve been hastily compiling sound files of some Halloween tricks and treats. Nobody told me there would be costumes! Join us today for an engaging and amusing mix of music and conversation, as we sip our elderberry wine and arsenic, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. EDT!

Stanley Silverman Interview WUSB Sting
Fresh off my unceremonious cancellation from WWFM – The Classical Network, I’ll be joining Phil Merkel this afternoon on WUSB for an interview with composer Stanley Silverman.
Silverman’s career has been so rich and diverse, embracing theater, film, television, classical music, and pop – he’s collaborated with artists as varied as Leonard Bernstein, Anthony Burgess, Arthur Miller, Mike Nichols, Joseph Papp, Arthur Penn, Paul Simon, Sting, James Taylor, and Michael Tilson Thomas – that it would be quixotic to believe we would even be able to scratch the surface in a 40-minute visit.
Be that as it may, Silverman will drop by to talk about his latest album, “In Celebration: The Piano Trios of Stanley Silverman,” on the Signum Classics label (Signum Records). The music is performed by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, with special guest artist Sting. Yes, THAT Sting.
The conversation will take place this afternoon in the 3:00 hour on Captain Phil’s Planet on WUSB, the radio station of Stony Brook University. I hope you’ll join us in welcoming Stanley Silverman!

Star Wars Radio Talk with Captain Phil
After reading yesterday’s panegyric and screed about the rise and fall of Skywalker, Phil Merkel invited me on to his radio show, Captain Phil’s Planet, to continue in that vein this afternoon, beginning around 3:40 EDT.
There will be about a half-hour of jawboning about Jawas and tunes from Tatooine, as Cap and I travel back to our collective youth, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far way, to reminisce about what it was like to see “Star Wars” in the theater in 1977.
Tune in to WUSB, the radio station of Stony Brook University, at wusb.fm. To hear the stream, click on the silver WUSB player button at the upper left-hand side of the page.
See you there, dorks!

Ukrainian Composers on WUSB Radio Today
Phil Merkel of Captain Phil’s Planet has been very kind in inviting me onto his radio show this afternoon on WUSB – the radio station of Stony Brook University – to talk a bit about composers and musicians of Ukraine.
So I’ll be dropping by around 3:30/3:40 EST. Maybe we’ll even get to enjoy some music by Valentin Silvestrov and Mikola Lysenko. This is free-form radio, mind you, so if you tune in a little early, you might get an earful of Ukrainian metal! (It’s primarily a prog rock show.)
Then stick around! At 4:00, Roy Bjellquist will join us to help drum up interest in tomorrow night’s program of classic television themes on our Facebook livestream, Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.
Just putting it out there, in case you’re interested. You’ll get to hear us babble about music a bit. Maybe you’ll even have your interest piqued, so that you’ll want to check out some of the composers and performers who have contributed to making Ukraine such a rich cultural resource.

Memorial Day Reflection Music and Remembrance
It’s Memorial Day. At the tail end of a very wet holiday weekend, and a limiting year of pandemic, you probably can’t wait to cut loose with the burgers and the quoits and the three legged-races and the gumboot tosses; but I hope you’ll also take a moment to reflect on our comparative good fortune, and those who laid down their lives in the conviction they were defending our interests and securing our safety. We honor our fallen, even as we pray for peace.
I’ll be on the air LIVE for the first time in well over a year this morning, but it won’t be through the source you might expect. Instead, I’ve been invited to provide color commentary for Captain Phil on WUSB, the radio station of Stony Brook University, as he hosts a program of music for Memorial Day. Among some of the selections we’ve discussed are works by Kimo Williams, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Jay Ungar, and Romeo Cascarino. Listen today at 11:00 am EDT.
WUSB plays all kinds of music, so don’t be thrown if you tune in and happen to hear blues or progressive rock.
You’ll find the gray play button at the upper left-hand side of the screen, once you follow the link to wusb.fm.
