Last Day to Support Classical Music on WWFM!

Today’s the day! The final day of our membership campaign, and the last day of our fiscal year!

We know that, as a devoted listener of The Classical Network, you are passionate about the variety of music we present. This is music that resonates, whether from down the centuries or across the globe – enduring classics, presented alongside the new or unusual, in live concerts and superior recordings made by the world’s great orchestras or rising stars in the performing arts. The common thread is musicmaking of great beauty and humanity.

It goes without saying that you want us to continue doing what we do, that you want us to succeed. As a committed listener, naturally you are deeply invested in The Classical Network and everything we do to enhance the quality of your days – the daily comfort, reflection, insight, and elevation, inspired by our creative playlists, concert broadcasts, artist interviews, homegrown specialty shows, and hand-in-glove relationship with the local arts community.

WWFM is a virtual meeting place for the musical arts in central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. But it is a meeting place that is only as open and welcoming as our listener-members allow. Tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. marks the end of our fiscal year. Under ordinary circumstances, most businesses are humming along in their mid-year groove, and the average worker is thinking about summer vacation. For non-profit organizations such as WWFM, this really is it. Listener contributions at this time have a powerful impact on what next year’s budget will look like and how much grant money we are able to secure.

I know, as a devoted listener who is passionate about classical music, you want us to succeed, but I also know you are deeply invested in what we do – the specialty shows, the live concerts, the artist interviews, the lovingly curated playlists, and the symbiotic relationship with the local arts community. WWFM, as a medium, is in many ways a hub for the musical arts in central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. That hub is only as vital as we can make it.

WWFM’s Corona-Era Fund Drive Needs You

During time of COVID, even getting in to the station has been a bit of a challenge. With studios located on the campus of Mercer County Community College, by necessity WWFM has had to abide by college policy. To maintain safety, the campus is open only to “essential personnel” – and even THEY have been strongly encouraged to work remotely, if at all possible.

Needless to say, this makes fundraising kind of a strategic puzzle. But the end of our fiscal year is not getting any farther away, and, after all, necessity is the mother of invention.

Having received special dispensation from the college, The Classical Network will today begin its first corona-era fund drive. WWFM hosts Alice Weiss, David Osenberg, and Michael Kownacky will look to solicit your support, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT, while at same time practicing safe distancing. This will be accomplished by having everyone on microphones, communicating FROM SEPARATE STUDIOS. Furthermore, your calls of support will be answered remotely by WWFM staff.

It goes without saying that this is all very new to us. But the end of the fiscal year waits for no nonprofit! If you enjoy the music, and WWFM is an important part of your life, please do whatever you can to renew your membership, become a new member, or make an additional gift BEFORE JUNE 30th. WWFM Shows Return Thanks to Rachel Katz

Since the COVID tsunami broke across central New Jersey, I have not been able to get in to the station to upload webcasts from my two specialty shows, “Picture Perfect” and “The Lost Chord.” So for months, the most recent shows archived on the WWFM website dated from around St. Patrick’s Day – or roughly the time I began cultivating my coronabeard.

That now has been remedied, to some extent, thanks to production manager Rachel Katz, who has been working from home, but, every once in a while, has had to don the hazmat suit in order to enter the college and ensure everything continues to fire as it should. Searching for and uploading audio from my overcrowded folder takes time, as does making sure that all the settings are correct, so that the material can be accessed from the WWFM website.

Rachel has also been instrumental in ensuring that encore broadcasts of “Picture Perfect” and “The Lost Chord” have continued at all, as I have been sending her lists of shows in five-week increments, and again, it is she who has been hunting them down and loading them into the system.

Most of June (excluding this past weekend) is now available on the station’s webcast page, as is all of May. As far as I can tell, there are only a few weeks – the last two of March, and a couple in April – that are still missing.

Live Guitar Music from Newman & Oltman on WWFM

Live music-making is a rare bird in time of COVID. All the more reason to celebrate a recital by the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo today on The Classical Network, on a special Noontime Concert, coming to you live from Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Black Box Theatre, adjacent to the WWFM studios.

Michael Newman and Laura Oltman will perform music from their new album devoted to works of renowned Cuban composer Leo Brouwer – including a selection from “The Book of Imaginary Beings,” a piece commissioned by Raritan River Music and written specifically for them. “The Book of Imaginary Beings” is also the name of the album, now available on the MusicMasters label.

Also on the program will be Brouwer’s “Música Incidental Campesina” and two selections from “Beatlerianas” – “She’s Leaving Home” and “Fool on the Hill.” In addition, the duo will perform music by Enrique Granados, Isaac Albéniz, Manuel de Falla, Paul Moravec, and Jay Ungar (the popular “Ashokan Farewell”). The concert will be broadcast at 12 p.m. EDT.

Newman and Oltman, longtime friends of the station, are founders and artistic directors of the Raritan River Music Festival, which last month marked its 31st season (this year, executed totally online). They are also founders and artistic directors of the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes. The duo will celebrate its 30th year as ensemble-in-residence at Mannes College of Music this season.
