Happy 76th Birthday John Adams, Composer!

John Adams, the composer, may be no relation to John Adams, our second president, but today he is most definitely feeling the spirit of “76.” Adams was born on this date in 1947. Considered by some to be America’s preeminent living composer, he emerged from the haze of Minimalism to become the most versatile and substantial of early proponents of the style. In 2003, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his 9/11 memorial “On the Transmigration of Souls.”

Personally I’ve always been divided on Adams’ music. Some of it I find to be fun; some of it I find to be quite good; some of it I find to be boring, clumsy, or downright embarrassing. But what do I know? I’m just some dope posting on the internet.

My subjective evaluations do nothing to mar Adams’ influence or his standing. Happy birthday to John Adams on his 76th birthday, and congratulations on his long-term success!

FUN FACTS: Adams’ name may recall our second president, or perhaps his son, sixth president John Quincy Adams, but the composer’s middle name is actually Coolidge. Presidents John Adams and Calvin Coolidge were third cousins five times removed, through John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden of the Mayflower fame. Admittedly, none of this has to do with the composer, beyond the fact that he was indeed named for Adams the president, who had no middle name.

A few of my Adams favorites:

“Short Ride in a Fast Machine”

    “Shaker Loops”

“Nixon in China,” here introduced by Walter Cronkite

Brahms Tchaikovsky Birthday Celebration on WWFM

It just works out that way sometimes. Two titans at the top of their respective fields born on the same day. Think Rachmaninoff and Busoni (April 1). Or Kreisler and Heifetz (February 2).

On Thursday, May 7, The Classical Network will honor the dual birthdays of Johannes Brahms (born in 1833) and Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky (born in 1840), by assembling special request hours in their honor.

Have a favorite piece of music by either of these composers? Want to hear a cherished performance? Submit your requests ASAP on the WWFM Facebook page or by email at info@wwfm.org. This will give us time to hunt down the music and put it into production. The earlier you file your request, the greater the likelihood that we’ll be able to get it on air.

Also, we hope that you will renew your membership, perhaps become a member for the very first time, or make an extra gift. Any of these options would assist us greatly during this rocky time.

Celebrate Brahms. Revel in Tchaikovsky. And thank you for your support of WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

    Stravinsky’s Money Music WWFM Birthday

No applause, please! Just throw money.

There’s plenty to cheer about on the birthday of Igor Stravinsky, even if the composer could be a mite transparent in his focus on the bottom line. In a practice that would later become commonplace in rap, Stravinsky adopted a dollar sign for use in his monogram.

Join me today on The Classical Network, as we celebrate one of the greatest composers of the past century. He was certainly one of the best-marketed.

You can bet your bottom dollar on $travinsky, among our featured composers, from 4 to 7 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

With thanks to documentarian Paul Moon, director of Samuel Barber: Absolute Beauty, here is a clip – new to me – of West Chester, PA’s favorite composer blowing out a candle on the occasion of his 67th birthday.

Happy birthday, Samuel Barber, born on this date in 1910.

  • Chopin’s Birthday Mystery: February 22 or March 1?

Chopin’s Birthday Mystery: February 22 or March 1?

People lie about their birthdays all the time, usually to make themselves appear younger. In the case of Frédéric Chopin, he may have bought himself a week.

It is widely believed – including by his mother and himself – that Chopin was born on March 1, 1810. However, his baptismal certificate, filled out on April 23, gives February 22 as the date. The Chopin Society UK, in defiance of the composer and his family, is inclined to go with the latter.

Was there a conspiracy at work? Do we have ourselves a 19th century precursor of the “birther movement?”

You can read more about the Chopin birthday controversy here:

Or you can simply join me today to enjoy a sampling of his music, between 4 and 7 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and at wwfm.org.
