Beethoven Bash Success Thanks to WWFM Listeners

You know how it is, I hope. Personal and holiday obligations have a way of burning through dates on an Advent calendar.

Nearly two days after the fact, I wanted to take a break from attempted Christmas shopping in order to thank those of you who supported The Classical Network during our annual Beethoven Bash. Thanks to you, and listeners just like you, we were able to reach our fundraising goal of $8,000 before the end of the day on Friday.

I hope you will take especial pleasure in the music this time of year, knowing that you did your part to make it possible. Personally, I always take extra care when putting together my playlists in the days leading up to Christmas. Enjoy holiday favorites, both jolly and meditative, during the course of my air shifts in the coming afternoons (4:00-7:00 pm M, W, F, and 12:00-4:00 p.m. Tues.). It is my gift to you, brought to you courtesy of the generous support of WWFM listener-members.

What’s that, you say? Didn’t have a chance to pledge? Still looking for a gift for that certain music-lover? We’ve still got some of those 12-CD box sets of Beethoven’s orchestral works, all eager for a last-minute ride in Santa’s sleigh, for your donation of $120. You’ll find it, and a list of other options, by clicking on our “Thank You Gift” drop-box here:

Happy birthday, Beethoven! Thanks again, all the warmth and good cheer of the season, and best wishes for a new year of great music from WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

Halloween Fundraiser Success Thank You WWFM

Yay! We made our goal! Undying (and undead) thanks to all of you who came through with your support! Now we’ll be able to savor the rest of our Hallowe’en candy unhindered by earthly obligations. The scary music will rise, unimpeded, from 2 to 7 p.m. EDT – except, of course, for occasional pauses for me to offer on-air thanks.

If you had been meaning to donate and haven’t had a chance, we certainly won’t turn you away now. Our zombified staff will be milling about for the remainder of our business hours, so feel free to call 1-888-232-1212; or you can contribute anytime at wwfm.org.

If you had NOT been meaning to contribute, it’s probably a good idea to turn off the porch lights and act like you’re not home…

We at WWFM – The Classical Network tip our pointy hats to our loyal and generous listener-members. Thank you again for keeping both our treat bags and our coffers full!

  • Hear the Difference Give to The Classical Network

Hear the Difference Give to The Classical Network

    Ah! So that’s the difference!

Performances from the Marlboro Music Festival. Birthday salutes to Franz Liszt and Ned Rorem. Music from Frankenstein movies. These are just some of the representative offerings you enjoyed on The Classical Network over the past week – and I am drawing only from my own shifts.

The truth is, The Classical Network has always been bigger than one person. Each of us, programmers and listeners alike, has the power to influence what kind of music is available to our community. A lot of radio stations – of the few classical radio stations that are left – feel that they have to play it safe. Whenever you tune in, you know you’re going to get Mozart or Vivaldi or Dvorak or Tchaikovsky. All great composers. But even they wrote a lot of music that never gets heard. We believe the world of music is bigger than that, and you deserve the chance to experience it.

Clearly, many of our listeners agree. We know that one of the things you really enjoy about WWFM is the variety of the selections. You’ve told us time and again that you love the mix. We’re often even told not to change a thing. Our knowledgeable hosts are in the unique position to be able to program most of their own shifts, which is highly unusual in professional radio. In fact, it makes all the difference.

Also, we are community-supported. It is because of the backing and enthusiasm of our listener-members that we are able to do what we do. The Classical Network offers many different perspectives, which keeps the listening experience fresh. The thoughtful juxtaposition of different eras, styles, themes, and personalities makes for an inimitable experience every day that you listen.

Can you hear the difference? If you are a supporter of the station, then in large part it is because of you and generous people just like you.

Today, The Classical Network begins a three-day sprint to raise funds in order to keep doing what we do best. Think about what it is that makes us stand apart, and how that enhances the quality of your life, and make a donation in whatever amount you feel you can afford. You may do so by calling us at 1-888-232-1212, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT, through Friday, or by donating at wwfm.org.

In addition, we’re curious to know what it is you appreciate most about WWFM. Let us know by sending us your thoughts. Click on the “Hear the Difference” box at the upper right corner of the screen at wwfm.org. We’d love to share your personal observations on what makes us unique and essential to your musical enjoyment. No donation is necessary in order to leave a comment, but we hope that you will support us. We couldn’t do it without dedicated listeners just like you.

Can you “Hear the Difference?” Show us by keeping us strong with your donation at 1-888-232-1212, or online at wwfm.org. Thank you, as always, for helping WWFM – The Classical Network make a difference in our community.

  • Dream Playlists Fuel a Classical Music Feast

Dream Playlists Fuel a Classical Music Feast

What began as an engaging idea for a fundraiser last week has become a real windfall for me, in terms of programming, as I have been living off all the delicious leftovers. Last week, The Classical Network solicited from its hosts, partners, and listeners “dream playlists” of their favorite music. We sampled from these during our membership campaign, “Play It Again,” with, I trust, a lot of shared interest and not a few moments of surprise.

At the end of the week, as everyone staggered out of the studio, I spied the heavily thumbed reference list where it lay on the counter, and I just couldn’t bear to let it go. There were too many nuggets yet to be mined.

Therefore, I devoted my Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday shifts this week to sopping up what I could of your favorite music, which, frankly, has brought just about as much pleasure as finding my way to the bottom of a bowl of chowder with a nice, buttery biscuit.

Through unforeseen circumstances, I was on the air again yesterday, so I was able to extend my mission. Now it turns out I will return to the air waves this afternoon for what will be the fifth and final installment in the series.

If you were moved to make a contribution to the station last week, thank you for doing part of the heavy lifting in order to keep this beautiful music on the air. If you haven’t contributed in the past twelve months, and you’ve been enjoying the service right alongside those who have made a real commitment to make that enjoyment possible, please consider making a donation at our website, wwfm.org. It really will make a difference. We are still considerably short of where we need to be by the end of our fiscal year, which will arrive on June 30 at 11:59 pm.

Time waits for no contribution. Give today, and know that you were essential in getting us over yet another hurdle. If not for the generosity of listeners like you, the programming would be directly impacted by deep cuts. It has happened before, so believe me when I say we are thankful for your support. Make your donation now; then join me from 12 to 4 p.m. EDT for more of your favorites, and ours, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Glenn Smith will be your host for a special concert from last year’s The Princeton Festival, featuring Concordia Chamber Players, in music by Beethoven, Richard Strauss, and Aaron Jay Kernis, at 4 p.m. I’ll return with “Picture Perfect” at 6, with selections from computer-animated adventures, including “The Incredibles,” “Up,” “Ice Age,” and “The Adventures of Tintin.” What a mix! Again, thanks for doing your part to help make it all possible.
