Back to the Future Discussion and Space 1999 Preview

Time got away from us last night, as we realized we were cresting two hours in our discussion of “Back to the Future” (1985). There’s got to be some irony in that. And there was still plenty left on the table.

This last of a golden age of summer blockbusters was the time travel movie we didn’t know we needed. Now who would want to do without it?

You can watch the entire conversation, with viewer comments, at the link. And make a mental note to change your clocks tonight, as we “fall back!”

Whereas this week’s show went by like a flash of lightning meeting a DeLorean tearing down Main Street at 88 m.p.h., next week may wind up being a bit of a slog – at least for Classic Ross Amico, who is no big fan of “Space: 1999.” Gerry Anderson’s “The Day After Tomorrow” (1975) looks to be cut from the same cloth.

At least it’s directed by Charles Chrichton, who directed “The Lavender Hill Mob” and “A Fish Called Wanda,” and surely anything with Brian Blessed is worth watching. It’s only 47 minutes long – actually a pilot for a projected TV series – so hopefully I’ll be able to make it through, provided I can find it streaming anywhere.

My enthusiasm is not assured on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Please bring your insights to the comments section, so Roy has something to play off of, when we livestream on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, next Friday evening at 7:30 Eastern STANDARD Time.

  • Far Side of the Sun & Space 1999 Celebration

There are some who seem to think I was inordinately cheery when discussing “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun” (1969), Gerry Anderson’s meditation on the existence of an alternate Earth. But what’s not to find amusing? Be forewarned, Roy and I “spoil” everything (as we generally do), though apparently gleefully so.

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner live-streams on Facebook every Friday and Sunday at 7 pm EDT.

“Journey to the Far Side of the Sun” kicks off a Gerry Anderson weekend, as Roy will also host a “Space: 1999” love feast tomorrow night, Sunday, September 13 – a date fans recognize as “Breakaway Day.” (For the rest of us, that’s the day the moon is blown out of orbit.) As with last week’s “Star Trek” celebration, viewers are invited to join him via Zoom to discuss their own experiences with and impressions of the show.

There will also be a special drawing for “Space: 1999” memorabilia – storyboards, a script, and an actual prop.

  • Journey to Far Side of Sun Gerry Anderson Sci-Fi

Journey to Far Side of Sun Gerry Anderson Sci-Fi

No, it’s not a Gary Larson cartoon. Rather, it is the brainchild of a man who built his empire on electronic marionettes.

“Journey to the Far Side of the Sun” (1969) will be our focus on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Roy Bjellquist and I will discuss the first live-action feature film produced by Gerry Anderson, the creative genius behind the puppet-driven TV series “Thunderbirds” and “Captain Scarlet.” Oh yeah, Anderson also went on to produce “Space: 1999.”

Today, not to worry, there will be no strings attached. We’ll party – or at any rate jawbone – like it’s 1999. Leave your comments and join the conversation: Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner will be live-streamed on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

NOTE: This discussion will kick-off a special Gerry Anderson weekend, as Roy will also host a “Space: 1999” love feast, similar to what he did last week for “Star Trek,” in which viewers will be invited to join him via Zoom to discuss their own experiences with the show and how it may have resonated in their lives. That program will air on Sunday, September 13 – a date fans recognize as “Breakaway Day” – also at 7 pm.

  • Journey to the Far Side of the Sun Review

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun Review

Remember the classic Marx Brothers mirror routine from “Duck Soup?” Expand that to an hour and forty minutes, and you’ve got “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun” (1969). Okay, maybe without the laughs.

Roy Bjellquist and I will talk ourselves blue over Gerry Anderson’s big-screen debut, on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Anderson made his fortune creating futuristic television series, such as “Thunderbirds,” “Captain Scarlet,” and “Space: 1999.”

Deliberately-paced, but with captivating special effects and groovy production design, Anderson’s “Journey” is never boring. It can, however, be a little WTF. Sure, the entire premise is like something you came up with as a teenager, when feeling your way into your first philosophical discussions with a close friend. But the execution is diverting and certainly spectacular.

What if there was a parallel Earth, hidden from our view, on the far side of the sun? And what if we were to travel there? What would we find? To tell more would be to give it all away. We’ll save that for tomorrow night!

Relive that dorm room experience. Leave a comment and join the conversation. Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner live-streams on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

  • Star Trek Open Mic Night & Sci-Fi Talk

If your idea of a good time is having two middle-aged nerds ruin a 42-year-old movie for you, this just might be the ticket. If not, I recommend you watch “Capricorn One.”

Tomorrow night, Roy will celebrate his 40th episode, and the 54th anniversary of “Star Trek: The Original Series,” by providing an open mic – or an open Zoom – for anyone who wishes to step up and share his or her favorite “Star Trek” memories, with perhaps a few additional surprises along the way. To register, send a Facebook message to Roy by 3:00 on Sunday afternoon.

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner is live-streamed on Facebook every Friday and Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT.

Next Friday, I’ll be back for Gerry Anderson’s “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun!”
