Mad Monster Party Rankin Bass Livestream This Friday

The only feature film of Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass – who gained a kind of immortality through their stop-motion holiday specials – “Mad Monster Party” (1967) unites everyone’s favorite feature creatures – Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolfman, the Invisible Man, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon (among others) – with the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller.

Furthermore, the screenwriter and character designer are both from the stable of Mad Magazine. How could it possibly miss?

Well, maybe there is something to “too much of a good thing…”

But what’s a party without excess?

We are happy to announce that SciFi Distilled’s Mike and Marybeth will array themselves in their Halloween finery to join Roy and me for an undead discussion about the film and perhaps a reminiscence about some of our favorite Rankin-Bass creations, among other digressions.

We’ll do our best to breathe some life into “Mad Monster Party.” Our motion will be unstoppable, as we’re Rankin’ on Bass. Leave your Peter Lorre impressions in the comments section, when we livestream on Facebook, during a special crossover edition of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!

  • Burroughs’ Lost World & Sci-Fi Livestream!

Burroughs’ Lost World & Sci-Fi Livestream!

It’s high adventure on a shoestring budget!

In anticipation of our upcoming interview with Edgar Rice Burroughs authority Scott Tracy Griffin (to be livestreamed on Facebook on Sunday, August 22, at 7 pm EDT), Roy and I will sink our teeth into Burroughs’ “lost continent” adventure, “The Land That Time Forgot” (Amicus Productions, 1975).

A commandeered submarine, crewed by World War I adversaries, arrives at an uncharted island somewhere off the coast of Peru. The island’s formation is such that conditions have not changed in millions of years! An uneasy alliance is formed as Germans, English, and Americans pull their resources to fight for their lives against prehistoric beasts.

Man-eating dinosaurs! Unwashed Neanderthals! Erupting volcanoes! Doug McClure!

    RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The U-boat departs this Sunday at 7 pm EDT!

Griffin, who’s written extensively on Burroughs, including two lavish quasi-coffee table books, “Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration” and “Tarzan on Film,” will join us next weekend. He’ll have a lot to tell us about the unlikely success of Burroughs, a failed businessman who didn’t publish his first story until the age of 35!

Burroughs’ imaginative works became sensations, hugely popular all around the world, from his heyday as King of the Pulps in the nineteen-tens, through his reign as King of All Media in the 1930s and ‘40s. Tarzan of the Apes remains one of the most recognizable of all fictional heroes.

Movies, television, and comics have kept the Burroughs legacy alive, from the remote jungle of Tarzan, to the inner Earth of Pellucidar, to the Mars of John Carter. Burroughs’ fiction is full of passion, wonder, romance, and blood-pumping action.

Remember “The Land That Time Forgot,” this Sunday! Then visit with Scott Tracy Griffin, August 22. Both programs are scheduled to commence at 7:00 EDT.

Burrow into Burroughs, in the thickets of the comments section, over the next two Sundays, as we livestream on Facebook, on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner!

  • Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

    Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

Is it possible some superior intelligence doesn’t want you to see the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner?

After at least two postponements, a horrific storm ripped through New Jersey last night, slashing the heavens with lightning, amputating limbs, and leaving Roy and I bereft of electricity. Mine was restored, finally, around dawn (too late for a good night’s sleep), but as of this writing, Roy remains powerless.

Be that as it may, we are determined that, after so many delays and setbacks, THE SHOW MUST GO ON. To this end, I’ll be sporting the tie-dye tee, as Roy leeches off the wi-fi of an unnamed neighborhood restaurant.

Tune in for nostalgic highlights! Viewer trivia! Audience participation! Also, my annual, subversive birthday card to Roy!

Marvel at the circles around my eyes, even as Roy runs circles around the suits. Join us in the comments section, or hop on camera and let us know how much you appreciate the show. L’amour the merrier, when we livestream on Facebook, this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT!

UPDATE: Roy’s electricity is back; mine was out again for half an hour this afternoon. Where this one will land is anyone’s guess!

  • Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Celebrates 100

    Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Celebrates 100

Tonight, it’s a tribute to endurance and “cama-der-oddity,” as we celebrate the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

What began during the pandemic as a lifeline to sanity and community, has become a weekly institution, with classic sci-fi movie and television fans joining us from around the globe – the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and (most notoriously) Hell, Norway – to weigh in on subjects ranging from “The War of the Worlds” to “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.”

Did you know: I was not actually Roy’s first cohost? Tune in for lots more trivia, hosannas, and audience participation. Highlights will be shared, prizes will be awarded, and my annual birthday card to Roy will be posted.

Put on your monkey suit, get all dolled up, and join us in the comments section. It will be 100 toasts to Roy, when we livestream on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!

  • Jaws Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner 100th Episode

“Tomorrow is the Fourth of July, and we WILL be open for business!”

With all respect to Murray Hamilton, we’ll be doing no such thing. We hope you’ll be satisfied with this archived conversation, as Roy and I jawbone about “Jaws.”

Next week we’ll mark the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Still got a ways to go before we catch The Grateful Dead. It’s customary for Roy to throw open the show on these occasions to audience participation. Details pending, but no doubt it will be a festive one. Hope to see you there, as we livestream on Facebook, next Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!

Until then, have a happy and safe Independence Day! The beaches are open, and people are having a wonderful time.
