Dog Days of Summer Music Playlist

This week on “Sweetness and Light,” we’ll be lounging around the water bowl with our legs out. It’s music for the dog days of summer.

When I was a kid, I remember hearing about “the dog days” and wondering what that was supposed to mean, exactly. I assumed it must have been when all the dogs were as flat or extended as possible (now known as splooting). Let sleeping dogs lie!

Later, I wondered specifically when that period was supposed to be. Before the internet, I surmised it must have been the hottest period of summer; and I suppose, more or less, I was correct.

It wasn’t until adulthood that I learned the dog days are an actual span that coincides with the heliacal rise of Sirius – the “Dog Star.” Heliacal rise is a fancy way of saying that the star becomes visible above the eastern horizon just before sunrise. In other words, it’s the morning star.

Modern sources are a little fast and loose with the astrological ties. The dates might as well come printed on the calendar, as in the English-speaking world, the dog days are now inflexibly July 3 to August 11.

Be that as it may, unsurprisingly, the dog days got me thinking about… wait for it… DOGS. More specifically, dogs and music. I hope you’ll join me today for a playlist of canine classics by Arthur Pryor, Peter Schickele, Sir Edward Elgar, George Gershwin, Walter Piston, and Daniel Dorff.

It will have you panting for more!

Better have some Milk Bones and a lint roller handy for “Sweetness and Light,” this Saturday morning at 11:00 EDT/8:00 PDT, exclusively on KWAX, the radio station of the University of Oregon!

  • Earth Day Classical Music Playlist

    Earth Day Classical Music Playlist

I’ve done a number of Earth Day shows over the years. Here’s a playlist from April 22, 2019. I’m adding audio links so that the musical experience can be reconstructed. Enjoy the music and, if you can think of a way to do it, kindly persuade your neighbors that just because something has metal or plastic in it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s recyclable. That includes lasagna foil, candy bar wrappers, and frozen food packaging! Or if you can’t think of a nice way to do it, just grab a Hefty bag and take an hour to pick up some trash. Then you won’t have to deal with anybody. You might think it won’t mean anything in the scheme of things, but it will make your environment more pleasant to live in. Also, I think you’ll find other people really do appreciate it. And you’ll feel good about it. If you’re in a wooded area, just watch out for ticks!

  • Solar Eclipse Playlist: Music Inspired by Sun Moon Stars

Solar Eclipse Playlist: Music Inspired by Sun Moon Stars

The last solar eclipse I viewed was on August 21, 2017 – just before a live air shift, as a matter of fact, so I thought why not share the playlist?

Oh hell, I’ll share the related Facebook post for that day, as well, with the playlist to follow. I hope it inspires you. Remember not to gaze directly at the sun without your special glasses, and enjoy the flooded earthquake Devil Comet eclipse!

If anything, once we’ve all damaged our retinas trying to view today’s solar eclipse, we’ll have developed a heightened appreciation for our remaining, unimpaired sense of hearing. Bask in the warm afterglow of today’s syzygy by joining me on [REDACTED] for a playlist curated from a wide repertoire of works inspired by the sun, the moon, and the heavens.

Highlights will include “Hymn to the Sun” from Pietro Mascagni’s opera “Iris,” ballet music from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta “Voyage to the Moon,” Kenneth Fuchs’ horn concerto “Canticle to the Sun,” reflective of St. Francis of Assisi’s appreciation of Brother Sun and Sister Moon, and George Frideric Handel’s “Total Eclipse” from the oratorio “Samson.” There will also be musical responses to the mythological figures of Apollo (the sun god), Helios (the personification of the sun), and Phaeton (Helios’ son, ill-equipped to handle his father’s blazing chariot).

Make us the bright spot of your day, as we celebrate the eclipse, from 4 to 7 pm EDT, on [REDACTED] and [REDACTED].org.

  • Saturnalia Ancient Roman Holiday & Playlist

Saturnalia Ancient Roman Holiday & Playlist

    December 17. Io Saturnalia!

In keeping with winter solstice tradition, it is a day to visit friends and bear gifts, especially candles. Schools are closed. Courts are not in session. Oh yeah, there’s also a sacrifice to Kronos (a.k.a. Saturn) and a riotous feast with benefits.

On this most popular holiday to emerge from Ancient Rome, the social order is inverted and strictures are loosened. Slaves are served by their masters. Gambling is permitted in public. There is drinking, noise, mirth, and wantonness. The populace is showered with figs, nuts, and dates, women fight in the arena, and cranes are hunted by dwarfs. In short, it’s an old-fashioned Christmas, before there was even such a thing as Christmas. Hey, if the Flintstones can celebrate the birth of Jesus, why not?

In the interest of converting rather than alienating, Christianity kept the candles, but frowned on the orgies, or at least looked the other way. But Saturnalia traditions continued to be practiced down the centuries, as evidenced in the medieval Feast of Fools, in the Victorian revival of gift-giving, in the lighting of candles, and in the eating, drinking, singing, and dancing.

Saturnalia, at its peak, was practiced through December 23. Wishing you and yours a merry one!

I think classical music is still waiting for its great Saturnalia piece. However, here’s a game attempt at assembling a playlist, to set the mood as you prepare the table for Saturn.

    Anthony O’Toole, “Saturnalia”

    Paul Büttner, “Saturnalia”

David W. Solomons, “Io! Saturnalia” (instrumental version)

    Adam Torkelson, “Grapes en Saturnalia”

    Caspar Diethelm, Symphonic Suite “Saturnalia”

Aram Khachaturian, “Spartacus,” Act II, scene 1: “Saturnalia”

    Lou Harrison, “Solstice”: “Saturnalia”

    Robert W. Butts, “Saturnalia Strings”

I appreciate the efforts, but none of them hold a candle to John Ireland’s “Satyricon Overture”
