    Philly to Princeton Radio Adventures

It’s a Tale of Two Cities, as I continue to ping-pong back and forth between Philadelphia and the Princeton area. I just learned that I will be filling in at WRTI again tomorrow, from 10 am to 2 pm ET. Listen in, if you’d like, at 90.1 FM or online at wrti.org.

Now, back to recording my weekend shows!

WPRB’s Ross Amico Celebrates David Diamond

And now, for my next trick…

If you tune in tomorrow morning to WPRB 103.3 FM, you may encounter music by the following: George Antheil, Paul Ben-Haim, Boris Blacher, Percy Grainger, Joseph Holbrooke, Gordon Jacob, Gustav Mahler, Bohuslav Martinu, Gian Carlo Menotti, Carl Orff, Ottorino Respighi, George Rochberg, Jacob Weinberg, and Henryk Wieniawski – but I’m not sure, since I’m such a poor planner. However, they’re all in the box and ready to go, along with much else!

You will definitely hear David Diamond, since July 9th marks the 100th anniversary of his birth (though I see a couple of my colleagues have already played my favorite pieces, including the eternally fresh “Rounds for String Orchestra”).

Adrienne Sirken will drop by around 10:00 to tell us about the The Golandsky Institute Summer Symposium and International Piano Festival. There’s a full week of amazing music-making ahead, including appearances in Princeton by pianist Ilya Itin; tenor Alex Richardson, cellist Sophie Shao, and pianist Thomas Bagwell; the remarkable monk-pianist Father Seán Duggan; young artist Wei Luo; jazz legend Dick Hyman; and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman with Yehudi Wyner. Find out more right now at http://www.golandskyinstitute.org.

Hopefully it will be worth setting your alarm (and mine). Join me tomorrow morning, from 6 to 11 ET, at WPRB 103.3 FM or wprb.com.

When classes are out, Classic Ross Amico is in.

American Composers & July 4th Music

I can’t guarantee any fife and drum music (I didn’t bring any), but you never know.

Nonetheless, I can promise wall-to-wall American composers, as we anticipate Independence Day. These may include (and won’t be limited to) George Antheil, Paul Bowles, Romeo Cascarino, John Corigliano, Daniel Dorff, Irving Fine, Lou Harrison, Bernard Herrmann, Jennifer Higdon, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Peter Schickele, Caroline Shaw, Michael Torke, and George Walker.

I am very pleased to add that Jerry Rife, for 30 years conductor of The Blawenburg Band, has found time in his busy schedule to join me around 9:00 to share just a little bit about the band’s upcoming concerts at Princeton Shopping Center (tonight at 7 p.m.), Yardley Community Centre in Yardley, Pa. (July 4 at 4 p.m.), and Hopewell Train Station (July 6 at 7:30 p.m.).

It’s pure Americana this week, when you tune in Classic Ross Amico, this morning from 6 to 11 a.m. ET, at WPRB 103.3 FM or online at wprb.com – classical music radio as the Founding Fathers intended.

American Music for Independence Day on WPRB

I’ve been following Marvin Rosen’s Classical Discoveries playlist with particular interest this morning, since I too plan to play all American music tomorrow, in anticipation of the Independence Day holiday.

Marvin is a much better planner than I, but at this point I can say with relative certainty that we MAY hear music by George Antheil, Paul Bowles, Romeo Cascarino, John Corigliano, Daniel Dorff, Irving Fine, Lou Harrison, Bernard Herrmann, Jennifer Higdon, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Peter Schickele, Caroline Shaw, Michael Torke, George Walker and many others.

Jerry Rife, for 30 years conductor of The Blawenburg Band, will join me around 9:00 to tell us just a little bit about the band’s upcoming concerts at Princeton Shopping Center (tomorrow at 7 p.m.), Yardley Community Centre in Yardley, Pa. (July 4 at 4 p.m.), and Hopewell Train Station (July 6 at 7:30 p.m.).

Tune in, wrap yourself in the flag, and feel the cool grass between your toes, as we celebrate America’s independence this week. Keep it classy with Classic Ross Amico, tomorrow morning from 6 to 11 a.m. ET, on WPRB 103.3 FM or online at wprb.com.

Happy Birthday Stravinsky & June Composers on WPRB

    Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNDbsj5zlV8

I hope you’ll join me tomorrow morning on WPRB, as we enjoy some of Stravinsky’s music, alongside that of the week’s other birthday celebrants, Edvard Grieg (born 6/15), Paul Gilson (6/15), Einar Englund (6/17), Charles Gounod (6/18), Manuel Rosenthal (6/18), Paul McCartney (6/18, by way of Leo Brouwer), Alfredo Catalani (6/19) and maybe even Jacques Offenbach (6/20). If I could find the time to plan more thoroughly, I would know for sure! The emphasis will be on lesser-played works and/or notable performances.

In addition, I’ll be joined on microphone by Melissa Bohl of Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts. PUSCC will present four free events at Richardson Auditorium, beginning tomorrow night at 7:30. The Aeolus Quartet will perform music by Haydn, Bartók and Dvořák. The doors will open at 7, but you’ll want to get there extra early in order to ensure that you’ll get a seat, since everybody loves “free.” More information on the series may be found at http://www.princetonsummerchamberconcerts.org/.

As always, every aspect of the broadcast is extremely subject to change, dependent on my clouded brain, as I gaze, bleary-eyed, into my cabinet of wonders.

Tune in tomorrow from 6 to 11 a.m. to WPRB 103.3 FM, or listen online at wprb.com, and keep it classy with Classic Ross Amico.
