Burroughs’ Lost World & Sci-Fi Livestream!

It’s high adventure on a shoestring budget!

In anticipation of our upcoming interview with Edgar Rice Burroughs authority Scott Tracy Griffin (to be livestreamed on Facebook on Sunday, August 22, at 7 pm EDT), Roy and I will sink our teeth into Burroughs’ “lost continent” adventure, “The Land That Time Forgot” (Amicus Productions, 1975).

A commandeered submarine, crewed by World War I adversaries, arrives at an uncharted island somewhere off the coast of Peru. The island’s formation is such that conditions have not changed in millions of years! An uneasy alliance is formed as Germans, English, and Americans pull their resources to fight for their lives against prehistoric beasts.

Man-eating dinosaurs! Unwashed Neanderthals! Erupting volcanoes! Doug McClure!

    RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The U-boat departs this Sunday at 7 pm EDT!

Griffin, who’s written extensively on Burroughs, including two lavish quasi-coffee table books, “Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration” and “Tarzan on Film,” will join us next weekend. He’ll have a lot to tell us about the unlikely success of Burroughs, a failed businessman who didn’t publish his first story until the age of 35!

Burroughs’ imaginative works became sensations, hugely popular all around the world, from his heyday as King of the Pulps in the nineteen-tens, through his reign as King of All Media in the 1930s and ‘40s. Tarzan of the Apes remains one of the most recognizable of all fictional heroes.

Movies, television, and comics have kept the Burroughs legacy alive, from the remote jungle of Tarzan, to the inner Earth of Pellucidar, to the Mars of John Carter. Burroughs’ fiction is full of passion, wonder, romance, and blood-pumping action.

Remember “The Land That Time Forgot,” this Sunday! Then visit with Scott Tracy Griffin, August 22. Both programs are scheduled to commence at 7:00 EDT.

Burrow into Burroughs, in the thickets of the comments section, over the next two Sundays, as we livestream on Facebook, on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner!

  • Shatner, Bond, and Voyage! Sci-Fi Talk

Watch the show William Shatner may have watched (for two seconds). Roy and I discuss “The Spy Who Loved Me.”

We’re off next week, but we’ll be back on August 6th at 7:30 pm EDT to talk about “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” (1961) – the movie, not the SUB-sequent TV series. (See what I did there?) Note the special start time!

We had originally scheduled “Voyage” for last night, only to discover it had apparently dropped off of all streaming services. So a big thank you to Alan Wendt, who was kind enough to share this link.

It is also scheduled to air on FXM this Monday, beginning at 11:25 am.

In the meantime, I’ll be on a “see food” diet. Leave your crab cakes in the comments section, on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. We livestream on Facebook, August 6th – Friday after next – at 7:30 pm!

  • Bond’s The Spy Who Loved Me A Sci-Fi Deep Dive

Bond’s The Spy Who Loved Me A Sci-Fi Deep Dive

All attempts to view “Voyage of the Bottom of the Sea” (the 1961 movie, not the TV series) have floundered. Currently, it doesn’t seem to be streaming anywhere. A search on Hulu reveals that it will be showing on FXM on Monday, July 26, at 11:25 a.m. So set your recorders! Due to the film’s unexpected scarcity, Roy and I will be postponing our discussion about it until Friday, August 6.

In the meantime, since it’s already fairly late in the week, we decided we had better choose a topic about which just about everyone has a passing familiarity – James Bond. To act as a kind of bridge from our last film, Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” to the upcoming chat about “Voyage,” we’ve selected “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977), in which Richard Kiel plays one of the most memorable “Bond” henchmen – also named Jaws – and in which, in common with “Voyage,” submarines play a major role.

For those of us of a certain age, this aired in heavy rotation on television – in common with all the Bond films – as part of the “ABC Sunday Night Movie” (whenever they weren’t showing Clint Eastwood’s “The Gauntlet”). So even if you haven’t seen it recently, I’m fairly confident you’ll still get a charge out of our depth and be able to sink your teeth into the comments section.

It’s a nostalgic trip to the unflappable Roger Moore era, with plenty of quips, camp, and Carly Simon, on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Nobody does it better, as we livestream on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

Back in the day, on ABC:

  • Cursed 100th Episode Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

For one reason or other, someone must have placed a curse on our 100th episode.

After numerous setbacks, postponements and delays – marked by electrical storms, power outages, and other technical difficulties – Roy and I dug in to make our last stand against the Fates. Whether or not the Fates won is for you to decide. All we have in the way of evidence is that the show was splintered into three parts and the debris wound up scattered over two different Facebook pages. I think everything is now made public and can be accessed at Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

A less hubristic team would have abandoned ship and paddled like mad for Episode 101. I hope you’ll join us, at a time when that sinking feeling will be a lot less disconcerting, as we discuss “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” (1961), the film that inspired the popular Irwin Allen television series. Walter Pidgeon leads an all-star cast. Hope to “Sea” you in the comments section, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

If nothing else, check out this four-and-a-half minute special moments montage Roy assembled from his first hundred episodes, chock full of guests like actor Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”), special effects artist Brian Johnson (“Space: 1999,” “The Empire Strikes Back), and Academy Award nominated composer Gerald Fried (“Star Trek,” “Paths of Glory”), to name a few. Also, memorable antics like the “Silent Running” drive-thru, the “Rollerball” hoagie, and the “Dr. Lao” Big Shave. Thank you to all of our viewers, and to everyone who participated in the first 100 episodes!

All shows are archived on the “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” Facebook page.

  • Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

    Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner Episode 100 Delayed?

Is it possible some superior intelligence doesn’t want you to see the 100th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner?

After at least two postponements, a horrific storm ripped through New Jersey last night, slashing the heavens with lightning, amputating limbs, and leaving Roy and I bereft of electricity. Mine was restored, finally, around dawn (too late for a good night’s sleep), but as of this writing, Roy remains powerless.

Be that as it may, we are determined that, after so many delays and setbacks, THE SHOW MUST GO ON. To this end, I’ll be sporting the tie-dye tee, as Roy leeches off the wi-fi of an unnamed neighborhood restaurant.

Tune in for nostalgic highlights! Viewer trivia! Audience participation! Also, my annual, subversive birthday card to Roy!

Marvel at the circles around my eyes, even as Roy runs circles around the suits. Join us in the comments section, or hop on camera and let us know how much you appreciate the show. L’amour the merrier, when we livestream on Facebook, this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT!

UPDATE: Roy’s electricity is back; mine was out again for half an hour this afternoon. Where this one will land is anyone’s guess!
