    Nichelle Nichols Tribute & Trekonderoga

Last night proved to be a lovefeast for Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s Lieutenant (later Lieutenant Commander, then Commander) Uhura. Thank you so much to those of you who dropped by to share your anecdotes and observations.

Nichols was a pioneer in more ways than one, who leveraged her celebrity to create a better world. Also, she had the ability to connect with people and to make them feel special, as attested to in every one of last night’s viewer comments and video testimonials. Two qualities that were noted repeatedly were Nichols’ kindness and her graciousness. May she rest in peace.

Other highlights included an impromptu crossover, when we patched into Captain Phil Merkel’s radio show on WUSB, and Warren Friedrich’s startling revelation that I wasn’t wearing pants!

We’ll be taking the night off next Friday, so that Roy can head north to Ticonderoga, NY for this year’s Trekonderoga, presented by the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour. Roy will be giving a couple of presentations there, so consult the website and keep an eye on the Facebook page.

I’ll be sitting this one out, but we’ll soon reunite for another Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, on Friday, August 27, at 7:30 pm, and another nostalgic conversation with a few laughs, when we livestream on Facebook – the topic to be announced.

In the meantime, have a great couple of weeks! Live long and prosper!

Sergiu Celibidache Documentary & The Yellow Tie Film

For those of you without the slightest interest in our activities at Trekonderoga this weekend (running our tests now), here’s a documentary about the far-out conductor Sergiu Celibidache. In “The Garden of Celibidache” (1996), Celi conducts, mentors young talent, and, well, putters around in his garden.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, Celibidache will be portrayed by John Malkovich in the upcoming film “The Yellow Tie,” which will be shot next year in the maestro’s native Romania.

That gives you plenty of time to learn how to pronounce his name. Repeat after me: Cheh-lee-bee-DAH-keh.

Trekonderoga Star Trek & Leatherstocking Tales

One of my life’s missions is to read all of the Leatherstocking tales of James Fenimore Cooper. So far, I’ve managed to slog through one every 15 years. At this rate, by my calculation, I’ll be up to the final volume when I’m 85!

I’m off to Leatherstocking country for a visit to Fort Ticonderoga, and then a surreal weekend at Trekonderoga, the sci-fi bonanza hosted by the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour.

There, Roy and I will take part in two “Trek” presentations. These will be livestreamed on Facebook, the tech gods willing, on Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm EDT. Actor David Frankham will join us on Sunday. Frankham appeared in the original series episode “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” He’s also accrued a lifetime of experience in classic television and film.

In addition, I’ll be sitting on some kind of music panel on Saturday at 1 pm. Some sort of Name That Tune feature, hosted by Captain Phil of WUSB. You’ll actually have to be there for that one, as it will not be livestreamed.

The rest of the weekend will be filled with tours, presentations, memorabilia, cosplayers, screenings of classic “Star Trek” episodes, and no doubt plenty of heavy drinking. The star attraction is Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei.

Set phasers for stunned! There will be no show this Friday evening, but you can catch us, like a couple of Gorns in the headlights, on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner – on the road at Trekonderoga, this Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm EDT, with special guest David Frankham. We’ll be watching for your comments, in the original Klingon, when we livestream on Facebook!

I am Master of the World in our conversation about “Master of the World” (1961).

Roy and I finally got around to talking about the movie, based on a couple of Jules Verne classics, starring Vincent Price, Charles Bronson, and David Frankham.

David Frankham will be our guest next week, as we take our show on the road to Trekonderoga at the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, New York. Roy and I will be on hand for two streamed broadcasts, the first on Saturday at 4 p.m., and the second, with Frankham as our guest, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m EDT. (Please note: there will be no show on Friday!)

Frankham appeared in the “Star Trek” original series episode “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” In addition, he has had ample experience from his decades in film and television, acting in movies like “Return of the Fly,” “King Rat,” “The Great Santini,” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” and classic television shows like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”/”The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “The Outer Limits,” and “Thriller,” hosted by Boris Karloff. No doubt, his visit will be marked by plenty of colorful anecdotes!

George Takei will also be in attendance at the convention. The weekend will include tours, presentations, screenings, cosplayers, and collectibles.

Then set phasers for stunned, and join us in the comments section for a double-dose of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, as we livestream on Facebook from Upstate New York, on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. EDT!

  • Space 1999 & Trekonderoga Preview on Roy’s Sci-Fi

    Space 1999 & Trekonderoga Preview on Roy’s Sci-Fi

On last night’s “Roy’s Tie Dye Sci Fi Corner,” watch, as I’m dragged, kicking and screaming, into the “Black Sun.”

While it’s true, I’m not the biggest fan of the television series “Space: 1999,” I do my best to remain respectful (by Classic Ross Amico standards), even if at some points I am obviously glazing over.

A big weekend for “Space: 1999” fans! In the fictional universe of the show, September 13 is the “anniversary” of the Moon being blown out of its orbit (seriously?), a catastrophe that precipitates the unlikely journey that forms the basis of the crew’s adventures.

To mark that date, this Sunday, September 12, a virtual “Space: 1999” convention, “Destination: Moonbase Alpha,” will be conducted via livestream, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT. The event will include visits by, and conversations with, an impressive array of actors and technicians who were involved with the show, including series costar Barbara Bain. Warren Friedrich and Robert Wood dropped by last night, around the 1:26:00 mark, to tell us all about it.

Proceeds will go to Alzheimer’s Research. For further news about “Destination: Moonbase Alpha,” and to make ticket reservations, visit http://www.destinationmoonbasealpha.com/

BTW, Roy will be taking part as one of the virtual convention’s moderators.

On next Friday’s Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, in anticipation of our landmark visit to Trekonderoga – hosted by the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour from September 24-26 – Roy and I will discuss “Master of the World” (1961), starring Vincent Price as Jules Vernes’ misguided (?) hero, a kind of Captain Nemo of the air, in a film that costars David Frankham. Frankham will be our guest in a livestreamed interview from Trekonderoga, on Sunday, September 26, at 1:30 pm EDT.

A colorful raconteur, Frankham not only appeared in the “Star Trek” episode “Is There in Truth No Beauty?,” he’s a fount of captivating industry anecdotes, acquired from his work in films like “Return of the Fly,” “King Rat,” “The Great Santini,” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” and classic television shows like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”/”The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “The Outer Limits,” and “Thriller,” hosted by Boris Karloff.

The weekend’s star attraction, of course, will be Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei. But you have to make the trip to see him! For more information about this three-day event, visit https://www.startrektour.com/

Then tune in for our conversation about “Master of the World.” The world is our oyster, as we livestream on Facebook. Share your pearls in the comments section when we livestream on Facebook, next Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!
