  • Carnival Music Feast on The Classical Network

Carnival Music Feast on The Classical Network

Shrove Tuesday. Mardi Gras. Fastnacht Day.

The last day to stuff down as many doughnuts as you can before the start of Lent.

To mark the occasion, this afternoon on The Classical Network, we’ll glut ourselves with music related to Carnival.

Among the featured highlights will be Heitor Villa-Lobos’ fantasy for piano and orchestra, “Momôprecóce” (“Carnival of the Brazilian Children”); Robert Schumann’s cryptogrammatic “Faschingsschwank aus Wien” (“Carnival Jest from Vienna”); and Igor Stravinsky’s Shrovetide ballet “Petrouchka,” in a recording conducted by Princeton Symphony Orchestra music director Rossen Milanov.

We’ll also enjoy a touch of Mardi Gras, with some pieces on Creole themes; a set of variations on “Carnival of Venice;” musical depictions of stock characters of the commedia dell’arte; and “Manhã de Carnaval,” from the film “Black Orpheus.”

First, on today’s Noontime Concert, it’s a Telemann blow-out. Tempesta di Mare – Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra will present “Fire and Invention,” part of its Telemann 360° project.

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) left behind an enormous catalogue of monumental compositions in every style and genre (with 3000 works to his credit, the Guinness Book lists him as the most prolific composer of all time), yet so much of it remains unrecognized, or even unperformed.

The sheer volume of his output has made it difficult for posterity to wrap its collective head around the full scope of his accomplishments. Tempesta is doing its best to change all that. Today’s concert will include a Concerto for Orchestra, a collection of Entr’actes, and a Violin Concerto, featuring Tempesta principal violinist Emlyn Ngai.

Tell your friends to tune in for Telemann. Then stick around for plenty of fried, buttery goodness. Abandon yourself to the debauchery of Carnival, from 12 to 4 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • Ross Amico Takes Over The Classical Network Today!

Ross Amico Takes Over The Classical Network Today!

Surprise! Get ready for SEVEN HOURS of Classic Ross Amico today, as I fill in for my colleague, Carl Hemmingsen, early this afternoon on The Classical Network; then stick around for my usual late afternoon air shift.

I’ll be celebrating a number of notable birthdays along the way, with symphonies by Jan Kalivoda (a.k.a. Johann Kalliwoda) and Charles-Marie Widor, a complete ballet of Léo Delibes, and a nod to guitarist Andrés Segovia.

At 6:00, I’ll be your host for “Picture Perfect,” music for the movies. This week, we’ll salute actor Kirk Douglas, who died on February 5 at the age of 103. We’ll hear selections from “Spartacus” (Alex North), “The Bad and the Beautiful” (David Raksin), “Lust for Life” (Miklós Rózsa), and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (Paul J. Smith).

First, on today’s Noontime Concert, once again, we’ll travel to the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, for another Concerts on the Slope. Concerts on the Slope was founded in 2012 to present top-notch chamber music performances featuring rising young artists from New York City and around the world. Today’s broadcast emanates from St. John’s Episcopal Church. On the program will be works by Andy Akiho, Nick DiBernardino, Thomas Kotcheff, David Crowell, Dave Molk, and Pulitzer Prize winner Julia Wolfe, performed by Sandbox Percussion.

There’s plenty of room in the box for everyone. Just don’t get sand in my sandwich, as I’ll need all the fuel I can get, from 12 to 7 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • Grace Williams Birthday Celebration on The Classical Network

Grace Williams Birthday Celebration on The Classical Network

Today is the birthday of Welsh composer Grace Williams. This afternoon on The Classical Network, I’ll be sharing her best-loved music, the “Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes.” This will be part of an hour of works inspired by well-known children’s tunes, including Mozart’s “Variations on ‘Ah! Vous dirai-je, maman’” (we know it better as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”) and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ballet “Old King Cole.”

We’ll also have music inspired by the movies, including “Cinéma” (featuring musical portraits of Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino, and Charlie Chaplin) by the French composer Louis Aubert, also born on this date, and a delightful morceau by Chaplin himself. Somewhere along the way, we’ll even celebrate the birthday of violinist Gil Shaham.

At 6:00, it’s chamber music from the legendary Marlboro Music Festival. It will be a program of contrasts – literally – as we juxtapose works by birthday celebrants György Kurtág and Luigi Boccherini and cap the hour with “Contrasts,” music commissioned by Benny Goodman from Béla Bartók.

We’ll call for our pipe, call for our bowl, and call for our fiddler’s three, this afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.
