A little breakfast music for you: Brian Ferneyhough, master of “the New Complexity,” is 80 today. The next time who encounter WTF, you’ll have a greater understanding of what the “F” stands for. Ferneyhough! Surrender yourself, if you dare, to “La Terre est un Homme.”

From another universe entirely is “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet” by Gavin Bryars, also 80 today. The work is built on a loop, a recording of an improvised stanza sung by a homeless man discovered in London’s Elephant and Castle. Read Bryars’ account of the background of the piece, beneath the video, when you follow the link.

Life can be very complex, yes, but also very simple. Happy birthday, gents.
