No time for a thought piece today. Suffice it to say, we may be living through troubling times, but there’s still much to be thankful for. Look around you, be appreciative, and enjoy it while you can.

Brennan Morsette “Happy Thanksgiving, Brennan! Reading William Saroyan right now (“Sons Come and Go, Mothers Hang in Forever,” a collection of essays and autobiographical sketches, working up to his meeting with Sibelius), with Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” next, for the 250th anniversary of her birth on December 16.

Classic Ross AmicoI’m reading Cardinal of the Kremlin by Tom Clancy and a couple of George Smiley books by John le Carre. I tend to read espionage books at this time of the year. Probably because they used to show James Bond movies during Thanksgiving. Anyway I like them especially le Carre, who really was one of the giants, RIP.
-
Brennan Morsette I had some John Le Carre (probably “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold) stored in the liquor boxes of paperbacks I carried with me from apartment to apartment in my 20s, thinking I would eventually get around to reading them. I don’t know if I finally traded them in. It’s been my experience that you should never get rid of anything, as you will only wind up having to buy it again someday, and it will be harder to find in the edition you’ve grown nostalgic for and much more expensive!
-
Classic Ross AmicoI know the feeling. In my youth, I lost a lot of unread Doc Savages (and some Shadows) in my move from California. Now they sell on ebay at expensive prices. Although I’ve gotten some of them back. I won’t even try with my Spiderman comics though
-
Brennan Morsette I gave Doc Savage a shot (only the first book), but I was hoping for more. If it would have been better-written it would have been great! Thankfully, I still have all my comics, which somehow survived decades in my parents’ hot attic with no apparent damage. They were in mylar sleeves in an acid-free box. I am sorry about your Spideys.

Classic Ross Amicothe H Rider Haggard Mayan book and Tenant of Windfall Hall are on my TBR for next year 🤗
-
Brennan Morsette I’ll probably read the Haggard Mayan book too, since it’s toward the top of the stacks on my desk. You may remember I read “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” a couple of years ago, my third annual reading of a Brontë novel for Valentine’s Day (my second least favorite holiday, incidentally, after New Year’s), until I broke tradition this year by reading “The Bloody Crown of Conan.” I’m holding the novel of “The Ghost of Mrs. Muir” (which I had no idea was a book before they made it into the classic movie) for this February.
-
Classic Ross AmicoI definitely remember you mentioning Tenant. That first put it on my radar. I was resistant at first. But I saw a synopsis somewhere, and you know, that DOES sound good. I will have done all three sisters. (That sounds bad, sorry lol).
-
Brennan Morsette Haha, you know I found it funny (your remark, not the book). Of “Jane Eyre,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall,” I found “Jane” to be by far the most compelling. “Wuthering Heights,” there’s a lot of stuff going on beneath the surface, which makes it interesting. There’s a new, lusty-looking movie coming out with Margot Robbie that I will go miles to avoid. “Tenant” is very good, but it goes on longer than perhaps it needs to. I wouldn’t have been ashamed to have written any of the three novels. I also read Charlotte’s “Shirley,” 30+ years ago. It impressed me as a very different book from the other three I mention.

All the best to you today, Ross!

Paula Satinoff Thank you, Paula. I hope you had a lovely holiday. I am thankful that it is finally winding down!
-
It was lovely, Ross, and worth the three-hour drive each way. As the years pass (seemingly faster and faster), leaving us with fewer loved ones or friends we grew up with, the ability to spend time with them – especially during holidays – becomes so much more precious, and a big part of my “I’m thankful for…”
As for winding down, I was a bit taken aback on Saturday when I looked up “Advent 2025” and discovered it began yesterday! It seems we went overnight from talk of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade to Christmas carols all over the airwaves. I’m in favour of a National Catch Your Breath Day: no sales events, no big celebrations, no frenetic activities…just a day of quiet and introspection (with plenty of good classical music from WWFM).
-
Paula Satinoff Tell me about it, Paula. The years fly by, and our circles contract. I’d be lying if I claimed not to miss the holidays of yore. Christmas starts so early anymore, with lights and decorations going up on the houses seemingly the day after Halloween, and in the stores perhaps sooner. I crave rest as much as the next person, but I am resigned to the fact that once we are caught in the vortex of Thanksgiving it might as well be 2026. WWFM is on my permanent naughty list, unfortunately, but I am taking in plenty of good music from other sources. I hope your holidays are pleasant and not too bittersweet. Sending you all the best.

Absolutely! We can learn from this woodpecker who has turned himself upside down to get at his food. Love the picture!
-
Dolores Cascarino Exactly! That was my thinking too in the selection of the photo. I was going to include several wildlife pictures taken from my kitchen window, but then I realized this one tells the whole story.
-
You made the best choice, as usual! Did you actually take this from your window?
-
Dolores Cascarino Yes. I am thankful. 🙂
