If you’re a denizen of the Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern states, then chances are the impending winter storm is beginning to worm its way into your consciousness. This week on WPRB, we go with the flow, with a full morning of wintry music, including, if time allows, trips to the North and South Poles.
We’ll have two sets of visitors: one from the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, including composer Jing Jing Luo, whose work “Tsao Shu” will be heard on the orchestra’s next concert, which will take place at Richardson Auditorium, on January 31 at 4 p.m.; and the other from Grand Harmonie, which will present the U.S. authentic instrument premiere of Beethoven’s “Fidelio,” in a semi-staged performance, at Richardson this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
We’ll also feature Dawn Upshaw’s Grammy Award-winning recording of Maria Schneider’s “Winter Morning Walks.” Upshaw will perform three songs by Osvaldo Golijov on the upcoming concert of the Princeton Symphony.
Pull on your boots and get in the mood for tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwiches, this Thursday morning from 6 to 11 ET, on WPRB 103.3 FM and at wprb.com. We’re industriously loading snowballs into the freezer, on Classic Ross Amico.

What’s going on? I’ve noticed over the past week or so that I haven’t been able to see anything on any of your pages. Has Facebook updated its privacy settings or something? Is anyone else having this problem? Since I am set up as a “business,” as opposed to as an individual, I can’t “like” anyone unless they too are set up as a business. I can’t even check to see what Marvin Rosen has planned for this week’s show, or read Kenneth Hutchins’ hourly ruminations on Frank Sinatra. I’m going through withdrawal over here!

Martin Luther King Day. Joseph Schwantner’s “New Morning for the World (Daybreak of Freedom),” on a text drawn from King’s speeches, still not available on CD? In this fine recording? Why?
Schwantner was awarded the Pultizer Prize for Music, for his “Aftertones of Infinity,” in 1979. “New Morning for the World” dates from 1982. Here’s a review of a concert performance of the piece in the New York Times. Sorry they didn’t record the Piston symphony!

The work received its world premiere in 1983 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on King’s birthday, January 15. This was followed by performances at Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia’s Academy of Music, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall, and Rochester’s Eastman Theater.
The album also includes Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait” and “An Eastman Overture” by George Walker. Copland and Walker too are Pulitzer Prize winners. Pittsburgh Pirate Willie Stargell hits it out of the park.
There is a recording of “New Morning for the World” on compact disc (on Koch International Classic), but the narrator wouldn’t exactly earn a Stargell Star. The LP, with the Eastman Philharmonia, is still the one to beat.
