Martinů and His World Bard Music Festival

Here’s a little teaser about the 35th Bard Music Festival, “Martinů and His World,” which will take place at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, August 8-10 and 14-17.

As a bonus, I’m also including links (below) to a few works that will be featured on this year’s concerts, to give you an idea what to expect. Of course, a lot of other composers’ music will be performed, as well. This is Martinů AND HIS WORLD, remember. The programs come pretty fast and furious at Bard. It’s a lot to take in, but you know I’ll do my best to report here on what I can.

If the promo’s music bed intrigues you, it’s from “The Frescoes of Piero della Francesca.” The audio is excerpted from an earlier Bard concert, but the work itself is not scheduled for this year’s festival. All the same, I’ll include a link to that too.

But first, more about the Bard Music Festival:

Bard Music Festival Berlioz Weekend One

I’ve got a good start on typing up my impressions of the first weekend’s concerts at the Bard Music Festival. “Berlioz and His World” is now in progress at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

Writing about opening night even now, but so as not to rush the process, I offer as a stopgap a few glimpses of this year’s merch-for-purch: the Berlioz t-shirt, the tie-in volume of scholarly essays, and so many Berlioz CDs, along with recordings of music by other figures of his circle.

After a few days’ respite, two supplementary concerts will be held on Thursday and Friday afternoon at Church of the Messiah in nearby Rhinebeck. I can tell you from experience, those concerts fill up fast, so if you plan to go, definitely reserve in advance.

Concerts at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and Bard’s Olin Hall will resume next weekend, beginning on Friday evening. That will give you a few days to work through any opium-induced nightmares.

  • Bard Music Festival Focuses on Schubert

Bard Music Festival Focuses on Schubert

The Bard Music Festival gets underway today at Bard College in idyllic Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. This year’s focus is on Franz Schubert and his world. The festival brings together world-renowned scholars and performers with Bard’s stellar music faculty, all under the supervision of the indefatigable Leon Botstein.

Among area participants will be Princeton University professor of music history Scott Burnham and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Eric Wyrick. You can read more about it in my article in today’s Trenton Times.
