  • Cursed 100th Episode Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

For one reason or other, someone must have placed a curse on our 100th episode.

After numerous setbacks, postponements and delays – marked by electrical storms, power outages, and other technical difficulties – Roy and I dug in to make our last stand against the Fates. Whether or not the Fates won is for you to decide. All we have in the way of evidence is that the show was splintered into three parts and the debris wound up scattered over two different Facebook pages. I think everything is now made public and can be accessed at Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

A less hubristic team would have abandoned ship and paddled like mad for Episode 101. I hope you’ll join us, at a time when that sinking feeling will be a lot less disconcerting, as we discuss “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” (1961), the film that inspired the popular Irwin Allen television series. Walter Pidgeon leads an all-star cast. Hope to “Sea” you in the comments section, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

If nothing else, check out this four-and-a-half minute special moments montage Roy assembled from his first hundred episodes, chock full of guests like actor Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”), special effects artist Brian Johnson (“Space: 1999,” “The Empire Strikes Back), and Academy Award nominated composer Gerald Fried (“Star Trek,” “Paths of Glory”), to name a few. Also, memorable antics like the “Silent Running” drive-thru, the “Rollerball” hoagie, and the “Dr. Lao” Big Shave. Thank you to all of our viewers, and to everyone who participated in the first 100 episodes!

All shows are archived on the “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” Facebook page.

    Zardoz COVID Ennui Sci-Fi Reappraisal

In “Zardoz” (1974), the Eternals, an immortal race, suffer ennui and even slide into catatonia, as each day bleeds into the next. No end, no passion, no inspiration, no purpose. Does this movie have added resonance in time of COVID?

In case you missed it (and I know you did), here’s my latest appearance on “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci Fi Corner.” Roy and I chisel away at John Boorman’s trippy, hopelessly pretentious, yet somehow oddly relevant parable, which riled critics and baffled audiences at the time of its release, but today seems surprisingly worthy of reevaluation.

New episodes of “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” stream Fridays and Sundays at 7 p.m. EDT.

Join Roy this Sunday AT A SPECIAL TIME, 4 PM, for a conversation with special effects legend Brian Johnson, the Academy Award winning artist who worked on “Alien,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Dragonslayer,” “Space: 1999,” “Thunderbirds,” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Thanks again, Roy! See you next Friday, for “The War of the Worlds!”

  • Alien Secrets & Star Trek Voyages with Roy

In case you missed it (and you probably did), here’s last night’s bull session about “Alien,” in which Roy Bjellquist and I share abundant behind-the-scenes minutiae and personal reflections, all in celebration of the loving craftsmanship that went into every aspect of the making of this landmark science fiction horror classic – an unusually literate monster movie with ample sexual and socio-political undertones.

“Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” is live-streamed on Facebook every Friday and Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Join Roy this Sunday for a conversation with Marc Cushman, author of “These Are the Voyages,” a three-volume set, authorized by “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, documenting each episode of the original “Star Trek” television series and offering behind-the-scenes glimpses into their creation. Roy and Marc will talk about Season One.

Then, if you’re an “Alien” nut, definitely tune in on Sunday, July 12, at a special time – 4:00 p.m. EDT – as Roy’s guest will be special effects legend Brian Johnson, the Academy Award winning artist who worked on “Alien,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Dragonslayer,” “Space: 1999,” “Thunderbirds,” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Thanks, Roy, for inviting me back. Live long and prosper! Or, in light of the weather, perhaps, perspire.
