Classical Music Double Surnames on WWFM

This afternoon on The Classical Network, to mark the birthdays of composer Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov and conductor David Lloyd-Jones, I’ve assembled a hefty playlist of musicians with double-barreled surnames.

We’ll marvel at the creative capacity of back-loaded and bottom-heavy artists like Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Julian Lloyd Webber, Peter Maxwell Davies, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, Camille Saint-Saëns, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Federico Moreno Torroba, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

It’s music-making so epic, it cannot be encapsulated in a single name. Double your pleasure, from 4 to 7 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

    Spooky Halloween Music on WWFM

Now is the time to brush the cobwebs from the old chest in the attic, pry open the sarcophagus in the dank crypt of imagination, and reanimate the undead music of Hallowe’ens past. For the next three days, I’ll be spiking my playlists with selections of a decidedly spooky nature – alongside a few birthday celebrations and the usual station business. The sense of menace will culminate in a Hallowe’en blow-out on October 31, including an especially creepy “Music from Marlboro.”

I have no idea what my colleagues have planned for the next few days, but here are the hours during which you are guaranteed to encounter at least a few musical chills (all times Eastern Daylight).

    Today: 3 to 7 p.m.
    Tomorrow: 1 to 4 p.m.
    Wednesday: 4 to 7 p.m.

Please note: I will be on one hour earlier than usual today, providing an extra opportunity to throw a sheet over my head and cry boo!

Don’t try buying me off with McDonald’s gift certificates. I only accept dimes, beginning this afternoon at 3:00 EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • WWFM Listener Favorites Countdown Week

    WWFM Listener Favorites Countdown Week

Mom always liked you best. Okay, so we really do play favorites on The Classical Network.

For the remainder of this week, the bulk of our daytime programming will be drawn from “favorites” lists submitted by WWFM staff, guest programmers, and listeners just like you. This should provide a lot of fascinating Venn diagrams as, for instance, we learn what pieces David Osenberg, Glenn Smith, Alice Weiss, and Rachel Katz have in common, or how many listeners hold dear the same Korngold aria as Classic Ross Amico. On Friday, we’ll stack up the pieces with the most votes, and enjoy a classical music countdown.

Remember, this is also the end of our fiscal year. We’re all going to try to have a lot of fun with this, but we will also be involved in the very serious business of trying to raise the money to keep your favorite classical music station in the black. Don’t think that your contribution won’t make a difference. Donate now at 1-888-232-1212, or online at wwfm.org.

Thank you for your support. Mom always did like you best. Our “Play It Again” drive gets underway at 9 a.m. EDT. I’ll be along at noon to spin some of our favorites, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • Brahms vs Tchaikovsky Birthday Battle

    Brahms vs Tchaikovsky Birthday Battle

In this corner, weighing in at 250 pounds… ladies and gentlemen, the original Liebeslieder Waltzer… the Hamburger from Hamburg… Johannes Brahms. In the opposite corner, at 180… the infamous Marching Slav… the Nutcracker from Nadezhda… Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky.

Today… the birthday anniversaries of both. Brahms, born in 1833, and Tchaikovsky in 1840. We pit the two together on The Classical Network in an historic Battle of the Beards, a hummable rumble that will span 12 hours, from 8 to 8 EDT, as we take your bets on a bankable future for classical music on the air waves and your votes for prominence in the pantheon of Brahms or Tchaikovsky.

Call now, at 1-888-232-1212, or contribute online at wwfm.org. We’ll tally the votes tonight in the 7:00 hour. David Osenberg and I will be squinting through the blood, sweat and tears, from 4 to 8 p.m. EDT. Strike a blow for great music. Join us ringside on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org. As always, we thank you for your support!
