  • Trilogy of Terror & October Horror Movie Schedule

Every Zuni fetish doll has his day, and Roy and I finally had our discussion about Dan Curtis’ “Trilogy of Terror” (1975), the ABC Movie of the Week, starring Karen Black – in four different roles, no less – that scarred everyone for life. At least it wasn’t “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” That movie still makes me want to sleep with the light on. At any rate, as always, we spoil everything (if “Trilogy of Terror” CAN be spoiled), so watch at your peril.

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner livestreams on Facebook every Friday and Sunday at 7 pm EDT. I’m already the regular Friday co-host, but in the service of Halloween, my favorite holiday, I’ve signed on for Sundays this month, as well.

This Sunday, don’t fall asleep! We’ll be discussing Philip Kaufman’s superb 1978 remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

In case you’re curious, here’s what we’ve got planned for the rest of the month:

October 11 “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978)

October 16 “Kolchak: The Night Stalker”

October 18 “Night of the Living Dead” (1968)

    October 23 “Soylent Green”

October 25 “The Devil Rides Out” (a.k.a. “The Devil’s Bride”)

    October 30, “Young Frankenstein”

For “Soylent Green,” we’ll be joined by special guest Shari Bethman-Bjellquist.

And for “Young Frankenstein,” we’ll be joined by Michael Rizzo and Marybeth Ritkouski, our friends from SciFi Distilled. The October 30th broadcast will also include a virtual costume party, open to anyone who would care to participate.

If you’re blue and don’t know where to go to, why don’t you go where sci-fi sits? We’re spoilin’ all the hits!

  • Trilogy of Terror Zoom Rescheduled

    Trilogy of Terror Zoom Rescheduled

FOR THE LAST TIME (I hope), Roy and I will be Zooming with the Zuni.

Due to last week’s connectivity issues, our deconstruction of “Trilogy of Terror” (1975) has been rescheduled for this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

We’ll be coming your way TWICE every weekend in October to spoil your favorite movies. “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner: The Halloween Edition” is livestreamed on Facebook. Follow the link below at the appointed time:

On deck for Sunday night – also at 7:00 EDT – “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978).

    We’ll save you a pod.

  • Horror Movies Double Feature Halloween Month

Horror Movies Double Feature Halloween Month

In a month of two full moons, and with Mars closer to the earth than it will be for another 15 years, sci-fi becomes “SCYTHE-fi,” as Roy and my focus this month will be on horror movies. Yayyyyyyyyyy!

Or perhaps I should say, AAAaaaaaOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…

Unfortunately, we had a problem with our Zuni fetish doll last week, which caused some connectivity issues, so our coverage of “Trilogy of Terror” (1975) had to be postponed until tomorrow evening.

The good news is, we’ve had time to discuss what else we’d like to do, and after careful negotiation, we now have a schedule in place for both Fridays AND Sundays through Halloween. That’s right, we’ll bookend EVERY WEEKEND this month, and spoil twice as many movies.

I hope you’ll join us tomorrow for a dissection of Karen Black’s horror television triptych. The conversation begins – and, as always, your insights are welcome – this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

Then on Sunday, the seed is planted… terror grows! Our topic will be “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978), surely one of the most satisfying remakes ever filmed.

    Don’t fall asleep! Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner live-streams on Facebook every Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

    Happy Halloween, everyone!

  • Planet of the Vampires a Vampire-less Classic

In case you missed it, here’s the video of Roy Bjellquist and me defying the living dead and “Planet of the Vampires” (1965), arguably the most influential vampire movie not to have any vampires. Perhaps there wasn’t enough money in the budget for plastic teeth?

As always, spoilers are a part of the conversation. But the charm of “Planet of the Vampires” isn’t really in its plot, which we’ve seen many times now, most memorably in “Alien.” A distress beacon lures would-be rescuers to a creepy, unknown world, where an unseen threat aims to use them as hosts. Fortunately, Barry Sullivan is there in his rubber unitard to beat some sense into everyone. But the real magic is in director Mario Bava’s clever deployment of extremely limited resources, wringing every last drop out of the film’s dollar-ninety-eight budget.

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner live-streams on Facebook every Friday and Sunday at 7 pm EDT. Roy will be taking off tomorrow, but on October 2 the gloves are off. Our Hallowe’en fest gets truly underway with Karen Black and “Trilogy of Terror!”

  • Planet of the Vampires Movie Review

Planet of the Vampires Movie Review

To be any pulpier than this, it would have to be a grapefruit!

Join Roy Bjellquist and me, as we fortify ourselves with plenty of vitamin C and holy water for “Planet of the Vampires” (1965).

Allegedly, this Mario Bava cult classic went through 15 working titles (the original, in Italian, was “Terrore nello spazio,” or “Terror in Space”) before arriving at the one under which it was finally released in the U.S. Interestingly, there aren’t any vampires in it! But don’t let that get in the way of a good time.

Roy and I will try to “liven things up” a bit with our batty conversation. Share your insights in the comments section. Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner live-streams on Facebook this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!
