Star Trek Catspaw 50th Episode Celebration

    Trekker treat!

Roy Bjellquist and I will celebrate the 50th episode of “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” – and round out an all-television weekend (which began on Friday with an exhaustive discussion of the cult series “Kolchak: The Night Stalker”) – with a conversation about the classic “Star Trek” Halloween episode, “Catspaw.”

In this seventh installment of “Star Trek” Season Two, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to a mysterious planet wreathed in fog, to encounter witches, a haunted castle, a black cat, a warlock, a “transmuter,” and a couple of very unsettling puppets. Robert Bloch, author of “Psycho,” adapted the teleplay from his 1957 story “Broomstick Ride.” He also happens to give Spock some pretty good one-liners.

Set phasers for 50! I hope you’ll be able to join us in raising a glass of Romulan ale to the 50th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, live-streamed on Facebook, this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT.

    “Bones… Is that you?”

  • Kolchak Night Stalker Music Trek

Consider that night stalked! Simon Oakland, who played Tony Vincenzo, Kolchak’s long-suffering editor, was also a concert violinist, and composer Jerry Fielding, while blacklisted, filled his time, pleasantly enough, jamming with a young Johnny Williams. Even in the realm of the unexplained and the supernatural, music makes the world go ‘round.

Here’s Roy Bjellquist and my leisurely ramble through sinister after-dark Chicago, a nostalgic exploration of “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” (1974-75).

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner is live-streamed on Facebook every Friday and Sunday at 7 pm EDT. Tomorrow night, we’ll revisit the classic “Star Trek” Halloween episode “Catspaw.” Energize!

  • Star Trek Open Mic Night & Sci-Fi Talk

If your idea of a good time is having two middle-aged nerds ruin a 42-year-old movie for you, this just might be the ticket. If not, I recommend you watch “Capricorn One.”

Tomorrow night, Roy will celebrate his 40th episode, and the 54th anniversary of “Star Trek: The Original Series,” by providing an open mic – or an open Zoom – for anyone who wishes to step up and share his or her favorite “Star Trek” memories, with perhaps a few additional surprises along the way. To register, send a Facebook message to Roy by 3:00 on Sunday afternoon.

Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner is live-streamed on Facebook every Friday and Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT.

Next Friday, I’ll be back for Gerry Anderson’s “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun!”

  • Alien Secrets & Star Trek Voyages with Roy

In case you missed it (and you probably did), here’s last night’s bull session about “Alien,” in which Roy Bjellquist and I share abundant behind-the-scenes minutiae and personal reflections, all in celebration of the loving craftsmanship that went into every aspect of the making of this landmark science fiction horror classic – an unusually literate monster movie with ample sexual and socio-political undertones.

“Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner” is live-streamed on Facebook every Friday and Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Join Roy this Sunday for a conversation with Marc Cushman, author of “These Are the Voyages,” a three-volume set, authorized by “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, documenting each episode of the original “Star Trek” television series and offering behind-the-scenes glimpses into their creation. Roy and Marc will talk about Season One.

Then, if you’re an “Alien” nut, definitely tune in on Sunday, July 12, at a special time – 4:00 p.m. EDT – as Roy’s guest will be special effects legend Brian Johnson, the Academy Award winning artist who worked on “Alien,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Dragonslayer,” “Space: 1999,” “Thunderbirds,” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Thanks, Roy, for inviting me back. Live long and prosper! Or, in light of the weather, perhaps, perspire.

  • My Sci-Fi TV Appearance on Roy’s Tie-Dye Corner

For anyone (everyone?) who missed it, here’s my appearance on last night’s edition of “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.” It was great fun to catch up with a friend I hadn’t spoken to in about 35 years and to geek-out over a movie I first encountered at the age of 11 or 12.

Marvel at the backdrop of my CD collection! Thrill to my insights into the music of John Barry! Swoon over my dreamy coronabeard!

Roy’s show, devoted to science fiction movies and television shows of the 1960s and ’70s (with a special affection for “Star Trek” and “Space: 1999”), is live-streamed every Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m. EDT.

    Live long and prosper, Roy!
