Star Trek Apollo Interview on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi

As always, the journey is the destination, on “Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.” So if in the course of our discussion about “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad,” you happen to be lured down a blind alley by our ruminations on Doctor Who, Merv Griffin, Kiss, Oliver Reed, and Toonses the Cat, just go with it.

We’ll be taking be off tomorrow to gather our strength, in advance of next Friday, when we’ll be storming Olympus, with a conversation about the original “Star Trek” second season episode “Who Mourns for Adonais?” This will serve as preamble to Sunday, March 7, when Roy’s special guest will be Michael Forest, who played Apollo in the episode. Forest will share some personal reminiscences of classic “Trek” and talk some more about his career.

Gerald Fried Star Trek Legend Interview

Out of respect for Gerald Fried, Roy and I didn’t sing the “Star Trek” fight music – but you know we were thinking it.

Fried was our guest last night on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Click the video for recollections and insights from this screen legend.

Fried is the composer of over 200 film and television scores, including those for Kubrick, “Star Trek,” and producer David L. Wolper. His collaborations with Wolper include the film “Birds Do It, Bees Do It” (which earned Fried an Academy Award nomination) and the landmark miniseries “Roots” (which won him an Emmy).

Did I mention, Fried will be 93 on February 13? His most recent film, “Unbelievable!!!!,” received its online debut only months ago. In his spare time, he says, he’s now also writing screenplays. We are grateful to him for taking the time to share his fascinating reminiscences. Thank you, Gerald Fried!

Shore Leave Chaos Sci-Fi Show Tonight

On Friday night, Roy and I beamed down to a congenial planet in the Omicron Delta system for a little rest and relaxation. Unbenownst to us, it was actually a fantasy planet, so all our desires were made reality. Naturally, that meant there was much fighting, killing, and chorus girls in synthetic feathers. That’s what we get for going on “Shore Leave.”

Star Trek Shore Leave Party This Friday

Kirk scraps with an old Starfleet rival, McCoy picks up a couple of chorus girls, and Spock turns on the sass, in “Shore Leave,” a lighthearted episode from the first season of “Star Trek.”

The music is by Academy Award-nominated, Emmy Award-winning composer Gerald Fried. Fried will be our special guest this Sunday evening.

Gerald Fried Star Trek Music Interview

I am very excited to announce that composer Gerald Fried will be our guest this weekend on Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner.

Fried began his career as an oboist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Later, he followed his childhood friend, Stanley Kubrick, to Hollywood, where he composed scores for films like “The Killing” and “Paths of Glory.” He also worked extensively in television, writing music for “Riverboat,” “Shotgun Slade,” “Gilligan’s Island,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and “Mission: Impossible.” His music for the documentary “Birds Do It, Bees Do It” earned him an Academy Award nomination in 1975. He was recognized with an Emmy for his work on the landmark miniseries “Roots” in 1977.

Fried will join us on Sunday night to talk about his illustrious and prolific career. First, to whet the appetite for what’s bound to be a memorable conversation, Roy and I will chat about some of the music he composed for “Star Trek,” the original series, including that for “Shore Leave.” That’s the episode set on a planet where fantasies become reality, and Captain Kirk winds up grappling with his old nemesis Finnegan (resulting in a predictably tattered shirt). Our palavering preamble will take place on Friday.

And I can’t imagine we’ll get through the weekend without some discussion of the immortal fight music from “Amok Time,” in which a crazed Spock engages Kirk in a “kun-ut kal-if-fee” battle to the death.
