The Terminator Still Haunts From 1984 Sci-Fi

“The Terminator,” the film, may be a little creaky – as it was, even back in 1984 – but there’s something about the Terminator, the character, that defies time. In this case, quite literally.

Roy and I will don our ray-bans to talk about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career-defining role as a cyborg assassin from the future, as we wrap up our by no means exhaustive series of discussions about time-travel sci-fi.

The music is pretty terrible, the acting is bad, the budget is low, the logic is loopy, and the haircuts are quintessentially ‘80s. But extra points for Stan Winston’s animatronic and Gene Warren Jr.’s stop motion effects, which IMHO really are special, and for the inclusion of so many sturdy cars of the era. (Okay, maybe not the Gremlin.) Those pressed my nostalgia buttons more than anything. The mass shootings, alas, have lost their allure.

An implacable menace is indeed the stuff of nightmares. And no, I’m not speaking about writer-director James Cameron, who is on track to spend the rest of his life filming “Avatar” sequels. You can’t argue with success. But you know I will.

We’ll be providing plenty of ingredients for you to mix up your plastique in the comments section, on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. It will be an incendiary encounter with “The Terminator,” when we livestream on Facebook, this Friday evening at 7:00 EDT!

  • Star Trek City on the Edge of Forever Discussion

Star Trek City on the Edge of Forever Discussion

Only Dr. McCoy would leap through a time-displacing doughnut for a shot at a pot of Joan Collins’ coffee. After all, you can’t have doughnuts without coffee.

And you can’t discuss “Star Trek” without Mike and Marybeth of SciFi Distilled. Thanks to both for dropping by last night for our discussion about the original series episode “The City on the Edge of Forever” (1967). Lots of interesting insights into the episode’s genesis. In the end, what was filmed wound up being quite different from writer Harlan Ellison’s original vision.

This is the “Trek” episode most fans genuflect before. Our conversation on “the Edge of Forever” went by very quickly, if I do say so myself. The show is now archived here:

We’ll be BACK with yet another time-travel adventure, supposedly, on the next Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner. Roy will be making the announcement by the end of the weekend. Set your clocks for the next Facebook livestream, next Friday evening at 7:00 EDT.

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark Secret of the Incas & More

On the 40th anniversary of the release of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” enjoy last night’s discussion of a movie that heavily influenced it, “Secret of the Incas” (1954).

We’re taking Friday off next week, but Roy will be back with his son, Ryan, for a special Father’s Day edition of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner, on Sunday, June 20 – with the topic to be announced.

Then Roy and I will reunite for yet another riveting conversation, about “Dimension 5” (1966), a time travel-espionage-thriller starring Jeffrey Hunter, France Nuyen, and Harold “Odd Job” Sakata, on Friday, June 25.

Time travel always increases our chances of punctuality. The Facebook livestreams begin at 7 pm EDT.
