Julia Perry Violin Concerto Premiere Tonight!

TONIGHT! The world premiere of Westminster Choir College graduate Julia Perry’s Violin Concerto!

It will be performed by Roger Zahab and the Pitt Symphony Orchestra – the orchestra of the University of Pittsburgh – alongside music of Sibelius (“Finlandia”), Bruch (Romance for Viola and Orchestra), and Schubert (the “Unfinished” Symphony). Watch it live on YouTube at 8:00 EST.

Perry received her B.M. and M.M. at Westminster, where she studied voice, piano, and composition, from 1943 to 1948. She went on to attend Juilliard, then continue her studies with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. The concerto was composed between 1963 and 1968.

The Pitt Symphony is a student orchestra, made up of enthusiastic non-music majors.

Watch the concert live by the following the link, at 8 pm:

Hopefully, the video will be archived for later enjoyment.

  • Kansas Conductor Leads Lunar Concert

    Kansas Conductor Leads Lunar Concert

Raised in Conway Springs, Kansas – 30 miles south of Wichita – Alicia N. Brozovich demonstrates that there is still plenty of heart in the Heartland.

Her passion for music brought her to Westminster Choir College to pursue a master’s degree in choral conducting in 2013. Following her graduation, she joined the faculty of Westminster Conservatory.

Now she is about to lead her first public concert as conductor of the conservatory’s Westminster Community Chorus, at Westminster Choir College’s Bristol Chapel, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The program, “Vespers by the Sea” (think Sea of Tranquility), is designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and will incorporate historic NASA transmissions related to the moon landing. At its core will be Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass.”

“Ad astra per aspera” – to the stars through difficulty – is the Kansas state motto. Learn more about Brozovich, the concert, and the journeys we all take to come into our own identities, in my article in this week’s U.S. 1 Newspaper – PrincetonInfo, out today.

Westminster Choir College Sale Hopeful But Uncertain

This news broke late yesterday afternoon, but I am only just getting around to posting about it. In the same week that the American Boychoir stunned everyone with the announcement that the organization would be folding, effective immediately, after 79 years, cautious optimism is about the best I can muster for an unknown buyer of Westminster Choir College, particularly since contracts have yet to be signed. Let’s everyone keep our fingers crossed. Princeton can’t afford to lose another cultural institution, especially one of this magnitude.
