Invitation to the Bardo

Invitation to the Bardo

by

At last! My interminable review of Missy Mazzoli’s “Lincoln in the Bardo” is finished! Or as finished as it’s ever going to be.

Since it’s well-nigh 5,000 words, this is what I’m going to do. I’ll post the entire thing over on my website, rossamico.com. That way you’re guaranteed to get all the links and photos scattered throughout the piece. That will help break up the text, which otherwise will feel nearly as long as the opera’s first act.

You can still post your reactions here (if you’re viewing this on Facebook), if you’re so inclined. This is not a professional review, mind you; merely one man’s opinions. If you disagree, then God bless democracy.

I’m so happy to finally put this to bed. I feel as if I’ve spent the last few days splitting rails and doing arithmetic on the back of a coal shovel. Now I can get on with producing my shows for the weekend and maybe even celebrating Halloween.

“Lincoln in the Bardo” continues at the Metropolitan Opera through November 14.
