Kiri Te Kanawa Birthday Celebration on WWFM

We’ll begin on a high note this afternoon on The Classical Network.

Today is the 75th birthday of soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. We’ll listen to some of Dame Kiri’s great recordings as part of an all-operatic 4:00 hour. We’ll also celebrate the birthdays today of bass-baritone Norman Treigle and opera conductors Sarah Caldwell and Julius Rudel. In addition, we’ll continue our remembrance of the late Andre Previn, as he leads some orchestral selections from the operas of Benjamin Britten.

The 5:00 hour will bring recordings of conductors Kiril Kondrashin and Lorin Maazel, also born on this date.

And at 6:00, we’ll hear one of Franz Schubert’s late masterpieces, the String Quintet in C major, on the next “Music from Marlboro.”

Fat Tuesday André Previn & GEMS Concerts

Fat Tuesday! Or Fasnacht Day, as my grandmother used to call it.

Fry yourself a big plate of doughnuts and belly up to the radio this afternoon for an amazing playlist of knock-out performances by the late André Previn. We’ll celebrate the absurdly talented Previn as conductor, pianist, AND composer. The salute will commence as the clock strikes 1.

First, on today’s Noontime Concert, soprano Amaranta Viera will join the Ensemble Leonarda for a program of readings and music, which will include works by Nicolas Bernier and Jean-Baptiste Lully. The concert – “He’s Just Not That Into You!” – is an examination of classic love stories gone wrong.

It’s another gem from Gotham Early Music Scene (GEMS). GEMS presents free midday concerts every Thursday at 1:15 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 325 Park Avenue, in New York City. Vivaldi Haitink and Remembrance on WWFM

His music is for all seasons.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Antonio Vivaldi. The Red Priest. Igor Stravinsky once quipped that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 500 times. We’ll only have time for three.

We’ll also celebrate conductor Bernard Haitink on his 90th birthday, and remember three great musicians who died in the past four days: conductor, pianist, and composer André Previn, organist Peter Hurford, and choral director Joseph Flummerfelt.

Peter Hurford Organist Remembered

The organist Peter Hurford has died. His Bach, Poulenc, and Saint-Saëns recordings have long been a part of my life. Stop with the deaths of the musical giants already!

Dominick Argento Remembered This Sunday

This Sunday night on “The Lost Chord,” I’ll be honoring the late American composer Dominick Argento. Argento died on February 20 at the age of 91. Join me for his “Valentino Dances,” “Six Elizabethan Songs,” and “A Ring of Time.” It’s an hour of “Argento Mementos,” this Sunday night at 10:00 EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.
