One Last Trip to the Bardo

One Last Trip to the Bardo

by

In the past week, Facebook instituted a new policy, under which those of us who have “business pages,” or however you would classify whatever it is I post on, will no longer be allowed to share external links without paying a monthly subscription fee (because Mark Zuckerberg needs the money). This, of course, is a royal pain for anyone who oversees a page such as this, on which I share links to music, concerts, news items, and radio shows all the time.

The policy took effect just as I posted my review of Missy Mazzoli’s “Lincoln in Bardo” (in its world premiere production at the Met through November 14), the very existence of which has generated much interest. There was already angry blowback in the comments sections of several of my posts before I even finished polishing the review for public consumption, presumably because I had the temerity to tease it once or twice in what I thought was a humorous way. I had gotten so comfortable around here with the cozy 800 that usually follow the page and seem to enjoy it that I was unprepared for so much negative energy.

Understandably, I am eager to put the whole experience behind me, so I hope this is the last I have to think about it. But I do want to share a workaround, and it’s so obvious, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. Probably because I was so mentally exhausted last week, between grappling with 5,000 words, hoping to wrangle them into some semblance of coherence, and other things weighing on me in the real world. I am aware I repeat myself an awful lot, but I am done with it and hope to never read it again.

In fact, I am reluctant to prolong its topicality by even bringing it up again, but several of you have requested a direct link. Doofus that I am, it only occurred to me this morning that I can simply link it in the comments section of this post. So if you really want to subject yourself to it, you can access the review directly there.

Some have mentioned that they received a security warning when trying to access my website (rossamico.com). I don’t want to lull anyone into a false sense of security: though I suspect it is safe, I will check with my administrator to be sure. He oversees a number of sites and is always busy with other projects, but hopefully I will hear back from him soon. Just obviously don’t click on any pop-ups, if there are any, or fill out anything that asks for personal information (credit card, bank account, or social security numbers).

The only authorized pop-up is an invitation to subscribe directly to the website. Doing so is absolutely free and will allow my week’s posts to be collected and sent to your email inbox every Sunday. Again, I haven’t gotten the security alert, so whether or not you are confident doing that, I leave it to you. In the meantime, I will let you know what I find out from the administrator.

Thank you for your interest. And please, I’m not a horrible person! A little sassiness does not make one a troll!
