“Music… GOOD!”
This week on “The Lost Chord,” the playlist will hold fewer frights than delights, as we take a tongue-in-cheek approach to Halloween.
Thrill to Moritz Eggert’s B-movie in music “The Son of the Daughter of Dracula Versus the Incredible Frankenstein Monster (from Outer Space),” for two theremins and chamber orchestra, and full of evocative sound effects; Kurt Schwertsik’s “Dracula’s House-and-Court Music: A Transylvanian Symphony for Strings,” Gordon Jacob’s “The Barber of Seville Goes to Hell,” Malcolm Arnold’s “Tam O’Shanter,” an inebriated horseback flight from the forces darkness; and Joseph Horovitz’s “Horrortorio,” a mock musical response to the contemporary popularity of Hammer Films, about the wedding of Dracula’s daughter to Frankenstein’s son, presented in the styles of Bach, William Walton, and Gilbert & Sullivan, among others.
Devils and witches! Vampires and werewolves! Space invaders and mad science! Obviously, none of the pieces are meant to be taken very seriously. I hope you’ll join me for “Tricks or Treats,” on an all-new “The Lost Chord,” now in syndication on KWAX Classical Oregon!
