    The running time of “Superman: The Movie” (1978): 143 minutes.

    The running time of last night’s show: 140 minutes.

    That should tell you all you need to know.

    All the same, at the end of 2 hours and 20 minutes, I assure you, we still held plenty in reserve.

    As further proof of our moderation, we’ll give everyone a break on Sunday – because, frankly, we could all use a holiday – but we’ll be back on Friday to offer the usual mix of fun facts, outrageous opinions, and doddering misinformation about another sci-fi classic, TBA.

    Then on Sunday, January 10, our special guest will be COMPOSER GERALD FRIED.

    May your New Year’s Day be filled with pleasant diversions.

    It’s said that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his “Kegelstatt” Trio in E-flat major, K. 498, while playing skittles (essentially bowling). The work, scored for clarinet, viola and piano, takes its name from a venue devoted to the pastime.

    But it was Mozart’s dad, Leopold, who wrote a “Frog Divertimento.”

    Nothing says Happy New Year like a good frog party.

    Enjoy music from “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (Paul J. Smith), “In Search of the Castaways” (William Alwyn), “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (Bernard Herrmann), and “Around the World in 80 Days” (Victor Young).

    Verne’s characters frequently venture into the unknown, yet manage to overcome all obstacles. Of course, it doesn’t hurt carry a harpoon, just in case.
