The composer Gerard Schurmann has died.

Though he was born in the Dutch East Indies, to Dutch parents, Schurmann was raised in England. Following service in the RAF during WWII, he combined a career as a concert pianist with work as acting Cultural Attaché at the Netherlands Embassy in London. It was Eduard van Beinem, music director of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, who helped him attain a position as conductor at the Dutch Radio. Later, Schurmann returned to England to devote himself to composition.

In 1980, he was invited by the State Department to tour orchestras and universities in the United States. He moved here the following year, when he settled in Hollywood Hills. His concert music was championed by Lorin Maazel and Edo de Waart, among others. He also composed his share of music for film, including that for a personal favorite from my childhood, Walt Disney’s “Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow” (a.k.a. “The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh”), starring Patrick McGoohan.

Schurmann provided orchestrations for the Academy Award winning scores to “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Exodus.” He was 96 years-old.

In his early days, he was the enfant terrible who railed against tradition and even called for the violent destruction of the opera houses. Later, he grew into a revered conductor of Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartók, and even Bruckner. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain – a group he founded – and guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, and many others.

Today is the birthday of Pierre Boulez. Boulez would have been 95 today. He died in 2016.

Here is one of his most famous works, “Le Marteau sans Maître” – “The Hammer without a Master” – settings of surrealist poems by René Char, perhaps most easily digested in live performance. You’ll find translations of the texts posted beneath the video:

Playwright Terrence McNally has died of Coronavirus. In addition to his dramatic and musical theater work (he was a four-time Tony winner and the recipient of three Drama Desk Awards), McNally provided the libretto for Jake Heggie’s opera, “Dead Man Walking.” “Dead Man Walking” was given its premiere in San Francisco in 2000. It has gone on to become the most widely-performed new opera of the past 20 years. The work is scheduled to receive its Met debut next season. Heggie and McNally collaborated on a second project, “Great Scott,” in 2015. Also of interest, perhaps, to operaphiles, McNally was the author of “The Golden Age” (about Bellini’s “I puritani”), “The Lisbon Traviata,” and “Master Class,” a dramatic portrait of Maria Callas. McNally was 81 years-old.
