Sibelius Travel Mug Cool Design for Music Lovers

Look what arrived over the weekend! Bound to inspire envy in anyone who espies me swilling from it, it’s my new Sibelius travel mug.

When I imbibe from this cool-looking 20 oz. stainless steel vessel, I make the statement that I like my beverages austere, just like my symphonies.

The snazzy, quasi-1950s design is by artist Irina Ivanova. A lot of her work is inspired by music and musicians. You’ll find more at her shop on society6.com.

The vacuum seal delivers, keeping my joe hot and my shirts looking as fresh and pure as the unsullied snows of Lapland.

Speaking of Sibelius, we’ll enjoy some of his music, as well as that of his fellow Finns, Tauno Pylkkänen and Oskar Merikanto, among my featured composers today, between 4 and 7 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

Zorba’s Dance Celebrating Theodorakis on WWFM

    Did you say… DANCE??

Today is the 94th birthday of Mikis Theodorakis. Theodorakis is probably Greece’s internationally most celebrated composer, with dozens of concert and dramatic works and over 1000 songs to his credit. Concurrently, he has remained politically active, variously jailed, exiled, and elected to the Greek Parliament. Never afraid to speak his mind, Theodorakis remains a controversial figure. But he has brought a lot of beauty to the world. And everyone loves to dance, right?

Join me this afternoon for a ballet inspired by Theodorakis’ most famous film score, “Zorba the Greek.” It will be among our featured works, from 4 to 7 p.m. EDT. A man needs a little madness… cut the rope and be free, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

    Everyone’s doing the dance!

Korngold & Birthday Celebrations on WWFM

May I obey all your commands with equal pleasure, sire!

Join me an hour earlier than usual today, as we’re on target to celebrate a lot of birthdays, including those of John Field, father of the nocturne; Franz Xaver Mozart, son of Wolfgang Amadeus; Serge Koussevitzky, famed conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Donald Voorhees, founding music director of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra; pianist, composer, and conductor Ernest Schelling (one-time music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra); composer Tadeusz Baird; and pianists Alexis Weissenberg and Angela Hewitt.

There will also be a musical remembrance of cellist Anner Bylsma, who died yesterday at the age of 85.

At 6:00, it’s “Picture Perfect,” music for the movies. This week, it’s an all-Korngold hour, including music from two of the great Errol Flynn swashbucklers. Leon Botstein will remark on the composer and this year’s Bard Music Festival, of which Korngold is the focus. Botstein will conduct the U.S. premiere of Korngold’s opera, “Das Wunder der Heliane” – “The Miracle of Heliane” – tonight at Bard College, as preamble to the festival. Performances will run through August 4.

The festival proper will take place over two weekends, August 9 through 11, and August 16 through 18. For more information, visit fishercenter.bard.edu.

I’ll be splitting arrows with the precision of my bullseyes, this Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

  • WWFM Stream Down Due to Power Outage

WWFM Stream Down Due to Power Outage

FOR THOSE OF YOU ACCUSTOMED TO ENJOYING WWFM – The Classical Network VIA OUR INTERNET STREAM AT WWFM.ORG:

It’s been brought to my attention by an online listener that he has been unable to connect to our stream. The reason for this is that the electricity is out at the college. We are broadcasting, thanks to a back-up generator, but unfortunately there is no internet. No lights or air conditioning, either. All in all, a sad state of affairs. We apologize for the inconvenience. Hopefully the power — and the streaming — will be back up soon. Thank you for your understanding!

  • Angel Sings Bach on WWFM’s Noontime Concert

Angel Sings Bach on WWFM’s Noontime Concert

Angel sings sacred songs on today’s Noontime Concert. Countertenor Ryland Angel, that is.

He will be joined by organist Richard Erickson in works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen, and Johann Rudolf Ahle, collected in the “Schemellis Gesangbuch.” Georg Christian Schemelli published his songbook in Leipzig in 1736. His son, Christian Friedrich, was a student at the Thomasschule from 1733 to 1735 and later continued his studies at Leipzig University. Bach, of course, served as Thomaskantor from 1723 until his death in 1750.

This concert was recorded at the chapel of Saint Bartholomew’s Church, 325 Park Avenue, in New York City, in October. Free Midtown Concerts are held at St. Bart’s every Thursday at 1:15 p.m. during the regular season, thanks in part to Gotham Early Music Scene, or GEMS. GEMS is a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports artists in New York City devoted to Early Music. You can learn more about Gotham Early Music Scene at gemsny.org.

Following today’s concert broadcast, stick around for one of Anton Bruckner’s spiritually-infused symphonies, with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Bruckner pioneer Carl Schuricht.

After last night’s storm, we can use all the help we can get. Put your hands together, between 12 and 4 p.m. EDT, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.
