Oscar Music Special on WWFM

This week on “Picture Perfect,” join me for a special, two-hour edition, as we anticipate the 89th Academy Awards. We’ll hear selections from the five nominees for Best Original Score (“Jackie,” “La La Land,” “Lion,” “Moonlight,” and “Passengers”), alongside music from established, Oscar-winning classics, like “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Godfather,” and “Gone with the Wind,” and more recent favorites, like “Titanic,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and “The Hateful Eight.”

You supply the popcorn. I’ll cue the music, this Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and at wwfm.org.

Black History Month Classical Music on WPRB

Now that we’re all finished with the Groundhog, St. Valentine (snowed out, actually), and the Presidents, we can turn our attention fully to Black History Month. Tomorrow morning on WPRB, we’ll survey over 200 years worth of music by composers of color.

We’ll hear pieces by Joseph Boulogne (the Chevalier de Saint-Georges), Margaret Bonds, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Levi Dawson, R. Nathaniel Dett, Duke Ellington, Adolphus Hailstork, Ulysses Kay, Florence Price, William Grant Still, George Walker, José Silvestre White Lafitte (a.k.a. Joseph White), and others.

Handel Birthday Oops My Bad

Well, I’ve got egg on my face. How could I, who own practically two shelves full of his operas and oratorios, do a five hour radio show and not salute George Frideric Handel on his birthday? The sad fact of the matter is that my head is full of arcane composer birthdays, but Handel’s is not one of them. So I apologize, Georg. It’s not quite belated yet, but too late to give you the kind of gift you deserve.

I hope this overlaid saxophone quartet (with cute dogs) makes things better.

Washington’s Birthday Concert on WWFM

It’s the 285th birthday of George Washington. Get ready for George Antheil’s “McKonkey’s Ferry (Washington at Trenton).” It will kick off an afternoon of music including birthday celebrations for American composer Lowell Liebermann (his 56th) and Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade (his 200th). We’ll also remember conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, who died yesterday at the age of 93. All in all, it’s shaping up to be an eventful show.
