    Victorian Movie Music on KWAX Radio

    This week on “Picture Perfect,” it will be an hour of top hats and crinoline, with music from movies set during the Victorian Era. Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” may be everywhere this time of year, but we’ll be boiled in our own pudding with a stake of holly through our hearts. Enjoy a bit of counterprogramming, with a spot of tea, and selections from “The Importance of Being Earnest” (Benjamin Frankel), “Oliver Twist” (Arnold Bax), “Champagne Charlie” (Lord Berners), and “The Great Train Robbery” (Jerry Goldsmith). Even the pianos will wear skirts, on “Picture Perfect,” music for the movies, now in syndication on KWAX, the radio station of the University of Oregon!


    Remember, KWAX is on the West Coast, so there’s a three-hour difference for the Trenton-Princeton area. Here are the respective air-times of my recorded shows (with East Coast conversions in parentheses):

    Thanksgiving Movie Music on KWAX

    “Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? Every, every minute?”

    This poignant observation, from Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” stands as a timely reminder that there are things we should all be thankful for, while they – and we – are here to appreciate them.

    This week on “Picture Perfect,” we’ll set the table for Thanksgiving.

    None other than Aaron Copland wrote the music for the big screen adaptation of Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play (first performed in Princeton in 1938). The composer was at the height of his “populist” period. “El Salon Mexico” and “Billy the Kid” had already been written, and “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Lincoln Portrait,” “Rodeo” and “Appalachian Spring” would follow within just a few years. Clearly, there was no better choice to capture the essence of small town America.

    The concert version of “Our Town” has been in circulation for decades, but it was only in 2011 that a complete recording of the score was made available, briefly, as a digital download.

    Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire star in “Friendly Persuasion” (1956), based on the novel by Jessamyn West. The film’s portrayal of family and the resolution of moral conflict, as pacifist Quakers deal with issues both big and small – from the American Civil War, to the introduction of a “sinful” musical instrument into the household – make “Friendly Persuasion,” in my opinion, a good choice for this time of year.

    The film was up for six Oscars, with Dimitri Tiomkin’s score nominated twice. The title song went on to become the popular hit “Thee I Love.” Only Dimitri Tiomkin would use balalaikas to depict Quaker life!

    “Witness” (1985) may seem like an unusual choice for Thanksgiving, with its themes of police corruption and violence, but when honest cop Harrison Ford goes on the lam, he experiences the “plain” lifestyle of a close-knit Amish community. The highlight of Maurice Jarre’s score is a sequence called “Building the Barn,” in which the community comes together to raise a barn for a newly married couple.

    Finally, we’ll hear selections from “Plymouth Adventure” (1952), with its depictions of William Bradford, John Alden, Miles Standish, and Priscilla Mullins. Spencer Tracy stars as the cynical captain of The Mayflower, Gene Tierney is his forbidden love interest, Van Johnson appears as Alden, and Lloyd Bridges is the first mate.

    The music is by Miklós Rózsa, who already, at this stage of his career, was MGM’s go-to composer for historical drama. Seven years later, Rózsa would take home his third Academy Award for his classic score to “Ben-Hur.”

    It’s never too early to give thanks. There’s not a turkey among them, this week on “Picture Perfect,” music for the movies, now in syndication on KWAX, the radio station of the University of Oregon!

  • Spagvemberfest Spaghetti Western Movie Marathon

    Okay, Halloween is past. It’s All Saints’ Day. Not only that, but it also happens to be the start of Spagvemberfest!

    What’s that, you say? Why, it’s a month-long challenge to view a spaghetti western a day.

    What exactly is a “spaghetti western?” It’s a term bestowed by American film critics on Italian-produced oaters. Characteristically, they are filmed by Italians, often in Spain, sometimes in the American southwest. They likely feature an international cast, with a recognizable rising or fading star as their lead or leads. All the voices are dubbed in post-production, often to humorous effect. The characters are motivated by revenge or a lust for gold. In terms of morality, only a few degrees tend to separate the hero and the villain. Often there is an adherence to the conventions of the American western, however with the intent of deflating the western myth. There is certainly a preponderance of stylized violence. And if it’s worth watching, it probably features Somerville, New Jersey’s own Lee Van Cleef (pictured).

    Admittedly, the genre is an acquired taste. I don’t know about you, but I’m really going to need this, as we begin the inexorable slide toward the holidays.

    War of the Worlds & H.G. Wells on Picture Perfect

    This week on “Picture Perfect,” with Halloween only days away, my thoughts turn to Grover’s Mill, the community located not far outside of Princeton, NJ, that became the focal point of Orson Welles’ notorious radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “The War of the Worlds.”

    On October 30, 1938, Welles’ Mercury Theatre presented the classic’s dramatization after the manner of “breaking news,” with simulated live reports interrupting a program of regularly scheduled dance music. What the alleged reports described was chilling – a Martian invasion of rural America by hostile aliens bearing fiery weapons and poisonous gas. The whole story was authenticated, in real time, by a “Professor Richard Pierson of Princeton Observatory.”

    Those who tuned in late or were only half-listening completely freaked out, and reacted in a manner unimaginable in an era of social media. Panicked mobs choked the streets, phone lines were jammed, and police flooded CBS Studios. Welles had dropped the biggest firecracker right in the middle of a United States already on edge, thanks to widespread access to radio reports of mounting tensions in Europe.

    You might say Welles’ (and Wells’) fame skyrocketed. Orson Welles would match his early notoriety a few years later with his Hollywood debut, as producer, director, co-writer, and star of “Citizen Kane,” which inflamed William Randolph Hearst, while H.G. Wells’ novel has remained his most popular, the work having been adapted to film several times.

    To mark the 85th anniversary of the radio broadcast and the 125th anniversary of the publication of the novel, we’ll hear music from a classic film, released 70 years ago, in 1953, produced by George Pal, with music by Leith Stevens; also, from the Steven Spielberg blockbuster, from 2005 (titled, simply, “War of the Worlds”), with music by John Williams.

    The remainder of the hour will be devoted largely to other Wells creations, including “First Men in the Moon,” from 1964, with music by Laurie Johnson; “The Shape of Things to Come,” from 1936, with music by Arthur Bliss; and “The Time Machine,” from 1960, with music by Russell Garcia.

    The capper will be a loosely-related thriller from 1979, called “Time After Time,” which is not actually based on any of Wells’ writings; however, Wells appears in the film as a character, and his Time Machine plays a very important role.

    The screenplay is by Nicholas Meyer, who also directed. Meyer knew a thing or two about having fun with revisionist takes on well-worn, even iconic material, as evidenced by his earlier novel, “The Seven Percent Solution,” a new Sherlock Holmes adventure, which was made into a film, directed by Herbert Ross, in 1976.

    Here, H.G. Wells pursues Jack the Ripper across time to modern day San Francisco. Malcolm MacDowell plays Wells, David Warner the Ripper, and Mary Steenburgen, the banker who assists Wells in the present. The music is by Miklós Rózsa, a brilliant choice, and the composer provides one of the better scores from the twilight of his career.

    Roy’s got no power. Or is it a trick of Talosian mind control? Either way, tonight’s 200th episode of Roy’s Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner has been postponed to this Sunday evening at 7:00 EDT!

    So much for Star Trek Day. Live long and perspire!
