  • Chandos Airbrushes Tansman’s Cigarette?

    Chandos Airbrushes Tansman’s Cigarette?

Is it my imagination, or did Chandos Records really Photoshop out Alexandre Tansman’s cigarette? I’m not a smoker myself, but I think that’s taking political correctness a bit far. What’s next, Photoshopping Shostakovich’s liver spots? Let Slavs be Slavs aleady.

You can experience Tansman’s neoclassical mastery in his Partita for Cello and Piano tonight on “The Lost Chord,” along with Henry Górecki’s Symphony No. 4. Listen at 10:00 EDT at wwfm.org. The program will repeat Wednesday evening at 6, and then be archived as a webcast.

Smolij on Zádor Rózsa & Bacewicz at WWFM

I’m very excited to have just had Mariusz Smolij into the studios at WWFM The Classical Network to talk about his outstanding recordings of music by Eugene Zádor, Miklós Rózsa and Grażyna Bacewicz for the Naxos label. We’ll enjoy some of these, along with Maestro Smolij’s insights, on two upcoming episodes of “The Lost Chord.”

Smolij will conduct the Riverside Symphonia in music by Warlock, Bach, Grieg, and Haydn this Friday night at 8:00 at St. Martin of Tours Church in New Hope, PA.

  • Irish Music This Sunday on The Lost Chord

Irish Music This Sunday on The Lost Chord

This Sunday night on “The Lost Chord,” it’s a mulligan stew of music by Irish composers and/or on Irish themes, with works by native composers Philip Hammond, John Larchet and A.J. Potter, and Irishmen-for-a-day Arnold Bax, John Foulds, and Percy Grainger, including a roistering set of variations on “The Wild Colonial Boy.”

It’s probably a lot to expect you to join me for these “Presentiments of St. Patrick,” tonight at 10 EDT – everyone is going to be a bit hagged out from the weekend, between the pre-St. Patrick’s parties, Pi Day, and a short night springing forward into Daylight Saving Time – but do remember that the show will be repeated Wednesday evening at 6 (St. Patrick’s Eve), then archived as a webcast at wwfm.org.

Hurry back to hear selections from “Ben-Hur,” “Jaws,” “Psycho,” “Superman,” “Star Wars,” and more, at 89.1 FM and wwfm.org.

PLEASE NOTE: There will not be a webcast for this program. It airs only once, then disappears into the ether.

WWFM: St Patrick’s & Silver Screen Soundtracks

Trying to figure out your plans for Friday night? Why not grab some Sno-Caps and a large popcorn and join me for a double feature?

First, on “Picture Perfect,” we look ahead to St. Patrick’s Day, with music from “The Luck of the Irish” (by Cyril J. Mockridge), “Angela’s Ashes” (by John Williams), “Circle of Friends” (by Michael Kamen), and “The Quiet Man” (by Victor Young).

Then we’ll have an hour to hit the concession stand before the start of a special concert with the Princeton Symphony Orchestra. Vocalist Jessica Hendy will join guest conductor Lucas Richman for “A Silver Screen Salute,” featuring selections from “Ben-Hur,” “Psycho,” “Star Wars,” and more.

Richman has worked in Hollywood for 25 years, recording the actual scores onto the soundtracks of films like “The Village,” “As Good as It Gets,” and “Se7en.”

As always, “Picture Perfect” can be heard at 6:00 ET, with a repeat tomorrow morning at 6. If you miss it, you can enjoy it later as a webcast at wwfm.org.

The Princeton Symphony Orchestra concert will be broadcast tonight at 8. There will be no webcast of the PSO, so you had better be there or be square.

WWFM – The Classical Network can be heard locally, in the Trenton-Princeton area, at 89.1 FM. Internet streaming is available through the website. For a complete list of frequencies, look here:
