Film Composers Think Inside the Box on “Picture Perfect”

Well before Williams became America’s most famous living composer, he was busy honing his craft as an orchestrator, an arranger, a session pianist, and a composer in the bush league of television. This week on “Picture Perfect,” we’ll hear some of “Johnny” Williams’ music for “Lost in Space.”
Also on the program will be selections from “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” by Bernard Herrmann, the theme from “Wagon Train” by Jerome Moross, and a medley of well-known television music by Jerry Goldsmith.
Don’t touch that dial! Movie composers think inside the box, on “Picture Perfect,” music for the movies (and television), now in syndication on KWAX Classical Oregon!

Williams was the pianist in Henry Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme. Didn’t he also appear in one PG episode as a jazz lounge pianist?

Mather Pfeiffenberger THAT I don’t know. He certainly was an accomplished jazz pianist. He also played piano on The Big County, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Charade — although of course those weren’t television scores.

Classic Ross Amico Should have looked this up before posting. Williams appeared briefly as “Piano Player” in an episode of the 1959-60 tv series Johnny Staccato, starring John Cassavetes as a jazz pianist and private detective! Theme music by Elmer Bernstein.

Mather Pfeiffenberger Cool! I’ll have to look for it. It has to be better than his cameo in the last “Star Wars” movie! 😛
