Happy New Year Time Travel Movie Music

    Happy New Year, everyone!

2016 is poised to be a most curious, wonderful and disorienting one, with enormous professional and personal changes ahead. I hope yours is a good one.

If you’re a late riser after the intensity of last night’s revels, or if you find you just can’t take another “bowl” game, you might find an hour’s respite in music from time travel movies, on this week’s “Picture Perfect.”

We’ll hear selections from “The Time Machine” (1960) by Russell Garcia, “Time After Time” (1979) by Miklós Rózsa, “Somewhere in Time” (1980) by John Barry, and “Back to the Future” (1985) by Alan Silvestri.

That’s a time travel toddy for New Year’s, tonight at 6 ET, with a repeat tomorrow morning at 6. Or you can enjoy it later as a webcast at wwfm.org.

  • Clipper Erickson Rediscovering Lost Piano Gems

Clipper Erickson Rediscovering Lost Piano Gems

While the rest of the world is looking ahead to a new year, Clipper Erickson, piano is on the look-out for new repertoire.

Erickson, who is on the faculty of Westminster Conservatory of Music, Rider University, in Princeton, and Boyer College of Music and Dance – Temple University, in Philadelphia, has two new releases of rediscovered works which have languished in obscurity for decades.

These include world premiere recordings of pieces by R. Nathaniel Dett, the grandson of fugitive slaves who became an important figure in American music, and Cyril Scott, in his day a frontrunner of the English avant-garde, whose reputation faded over the decades until he was remembered, if at all, as the composer of one or two innocuous miniatures in Grandma’s piano bench.

Interestingly, there was a creative exchange between the two by way of eccentric Australian pianist Percy Grainger, who championed works of both composers. You can read all about it in my article in today’s Trenton Times.

NJ Capital Philharmonic New Year’s Eve Concert

What are you doing New Year’s Eve? I’ll be trying to take a nap in anticipation of doing the overnight at WRTI. So keep it down, if you please!

My recorded interview with music director Daniel Spalding will air as part of WWFM’s live broadcast of the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra’s celebratory concert at the Trenton War Memorial tonight at 8 p.m. You can listen to the concert live at 89.1 FM or online at wwfm.org. Or you can pick up a ticket and still be guaranteed to reach your party or get back home by about 10:30.

Last week’s newspaper article, about the concert, appeared on Christmas Day, thereby getting lost in the shuffle. Click here to read my piece about the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic’s New Year’s Eve concert in the Trenton Times.
