Prison Break Movies Picture Perfect

This week on “Picture Perfect,” we’re bustin’ out of the joint, with an hour of films about prison breaks.

Indomitable Steve McQueen does hard time on Devil’s Island in “Papillon” (1973), with music by Jerry Goldsmith. Paul Newman sticks it to The Man in “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), with music by Lalo Schifrin. Tim Robbins makes good use of a Rita Hayworth poster in “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994), with music by Thomas Newman. And an all-star cast, led by a barbed-wire hopping McQueen (again), flee their Nazi captors in “The Great Escape” (1963), with music by Elmer Bernstein.

Britannia Rules Waves WPRB English Music

Rule, Britannia! Britannia rules the waves – the air waves, at any rate, as this morning on WPRB we present a full playlist of English music.

The show will be anchored by three English symphonies: George Lloyd’s 6th, Edmund Rubbra’s 3rd, and William Alwyn’s 4th. What’s that you say? You don’t know them? Then the greater should be your enjoyment at their acquaintance.

We’ll also hear ballet music by Richard Arnell, film music by Sir Malcolm Arnold, and a world premiere recording of a violin sonata by Cyril Scott (with Westminster Conservatory faculty member Clipper Erickson at the keyboard). In between, we’ll fill in with some British Light Music and some early English dances.

I’d heed John Bull if I were you. Happy Birthday Mozart Genius of Music

Today is the birthday of Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. I suppose the last name is enough to give it away, but I am speaking, of course, of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was born in 1756; he died in 1791. In less than 35 years (he composed his first music around the age of 5), he created over 600 works, producing astonishing masterpieces in every category. Even so, he seldom had two thaler to rub together. Haydn wrote that “posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.” Posterity is still waiting.

Classic Ross Amico’s Albion Farewell & Hello

When you don’t know what to do, do what you know. Yet another pearl of wisdom from the lips of Classic Ross Amico.

Using this as my guiding principle, tomorrow morning on WPRB I will share five hours of English music, including works by William Alwyn, Sir Malcolm Arnold, Sir Lennox Berkeley, Rebecca Clarke, Stephen Dodgson, Gerald Finzi, Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells, John Ireland, Nicholas Maw, Cecilia McDowall, Edmund Rubbra, Cyril Scott, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, among others. I’ll also be playing some Richard Arnell for Marvin Rosen, and – to his annoyance, I’m sure – plenty of British Light Music.

PLEASE NOTE: Tomorrow will be my last Thursday morning air shift at WPRB. Beginning next week, after an eight-month sabbatical, Teri Noel Towe will resume Towe on Thursday.
