    Sunday Morning Light Music on WPRB

    Seeing as there’s already so much grief in the world – and who wants to deal with it on a Sunday – I thought I’d mark my return to WPRB by acting on a longstanding dream of mine to create of a little oasis of blitheness and melody.

    That’s right, classical music’s answer to Sheridan Whiteside is about to unveil his new “light music” show. Enjoy characteristic dances, marches, ballet, operetta, film music, parlor songs, music hall, piano miniatures, light classics, folk-inflected music, and standards from the Great American Songbook. I hope you’ll plan to make them all a part of your Sunday morning routine.

    The inaugural effort will be an exercise in “Keep Calm and Carry On,” as the playlist will be conjured wholly from the blithe spirit of the British Isles. Among the featured highlights will be an ample selection from the vaguely-recollected Edwardian musical comedy “The Maid of the Mountains” by Harold Fraser-Simson, some carefree nonsense about Italian brigands in love.

    Join me for the creation of this little musical Cockaigne, this Sunday morning from 7 to 10 EST, on WPRB 103.3 FM and wprb.com. Get ready to see the light, with Classic Ross Amico.

    Olympic Music Fever Film Composers Soundtrack

    Nevermind the flu – we’ve got ourselves a case of Olympic Fever!

    This week on “Picture Perfect,” in honor of the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, we’ll try something a little different, since most of the music we’ll be listening to was, strictly speaking, not written for film. However, all of it was composed by artists closely associated with film. Much of it will be ceremonial music, heard during the opening ceremonies and television broadcasts, but we’ll also have a suite from a score composed for a documentary on the games.

    Featured composers with include Leo Arnaud (a Ravel pupil who worked on “The Wizard of Oz” and went on to write THE classic Olympic theme), Angelo Badalamenti (David Lynch’s composer of choice), Lee Holdridge (a multifaceted musician who is the recipient of seven Emmys and a Grammy), Basil Poledouris (composer of “Conan the Barbarian” and “Lonesome Dove”), and John Williams (‘nuff said).

    I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is Olympic music, on “Picture Perfect,” this Friday evening at 6:00 EST, on WWFM – The Classical Network and wwfm.org.

    Ross Amico Moves to Sundays on WPRB

    Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.

    Not to put too much of a point on it, but “Classic Ross Amico” will no longer be heard on Thursday mornings on WPRB. Instead, stay sharp for “Mornings on Earth with Elizabeth,” which will take the early Thursday slot, from 6 to 9 EST.

    Cutting to the chase, henceforth Classic Ross Amico will play it to the hilt on Sunday mornings, from 7 to 10 EST. I hope you’ll continue to follow my rugged good looks and rapier wit, on WPRB 103.3 FM and wprb.com.
